How about the fact that the fuel injectors must be within 3% of each other. If over 3% the engine output will drop and/or one cyliner will overheat. There is an injector volume adjustment plate on the side of the pump body.

If the fuel does not get back to te tank . How would it get to the sump?
Is there a connection there that I have missed?
