What you need is an expansion tool that will expand the hose at the end so it'll slip onto the 40mm barb. Muffler shops use expansion arbors to streach tubing.
If the hose is steel reinforced the steel may come thru to the inside while trying to expand it, so I'd go with the all plastic sani-hose............................_/)
