1983 ~ First American Woman in Space Astrophysicist Dr. Sally Ride became the first American woman in space (20 years after female Soviet Cosmonaut Valentina V. Tereshkova) , beginning her ride aboard the space shuttle Challenger for a six-day Odyssey.
