Re: Help identifying shell

Re: Insurance Claim or No?

What were the relative positions of the involved vessels? Saying you were not paying attention puts you in the area of not having anyone on watch. In most disputed situations the Coast Guard has a...

Re: North from the Bahamas

Aden,
Go on north to Strangers Cay, nice anchorages close by, deeper easy exit off the bank and it puts you a good day further north to exit. Then stay on the Eastern edge of the stream. ...

Re: How Far Have You Sailed?

Who the heck knows? After 38 years as a licensed Master I don't have a clue. Sorta like people who keep diving logs. When you've lived in the Bahamas for 40+ years and someone ask how many dives...

Re: Yep - we dragged!

Many of the creeks in Md. have no bottom, the water just get thicker as you go deeper!
Not a lot that can be don unless you have a crazy heavy anchor.

Re: Replace this seackock & thru hull, right?

If your "surveyor" missed this I would be concerned with what else he missed. Was this an insurance survey or pre purchase? It might be a good idea to go through the whole boat with some...

Re: North from the Bahamas

The limiting factor is the statement that you do not want to sail overnight. If you could entice someone with offshore experience, the trip straight out of one of the Northeastern channels straight...

Re: Anchor Swivel Really Needed?

Swivel on chain is fine, just make sure it is large enough and well built. Swivel with a rope rode will cause hockles in the line?

Re: Berthing issues

Nigel nailed it. As you get more experience you will learn, often the hard way, that there are some manouvers you just cannot do. This is one of them, even with the help of the dinghy tug, the...

Re: Helicopter to the rescue, but not the way you might think

We had an equally funny experience. While sailing our 21' Hobie Cat we were becalmed about a 1/4 mile from our beach in the Bahamas. My neighbor had just landed his Lake Amphibian and was taxiing...

Re: Help in St. Thomas

If you are really interested you need to go look in person. Too many little things to mention. No shots of mast base, roller foil is bent, glass damage will be the least of your concerns. All in...

Re: Best living & sailing on U.S. East Coast?

You're mobile. If you like the fifth wheel why not do both. You are highly employable, why not Maine or the N.E. In the summer and somewhere South in the winter.
