Re: Head removal of Perkins 4.108

Get the crankshaft shop guys to check the connecting rods, there's a fair chance that prior to the stripdown you had a hydraulic lock in at least one cylinder if you tried to start the engine while...

Re: No raw water in exhaust - troubleshoot

Since you have an easy to remove coverplate on the raw water pump, undo it and rotate the engine manually. A previous reply mentioned the impeller hub slipping but there is also a chance that the...

Re: Diesels struggle to reach idle RPM

Is there any chance that this could be an alternator issue and the engines are slightly overloaded at startup? The D1-30 was fitted with a 115 amp alternator and that's a lot to spin at idle.

Re: Cant get Nothern Lights Generator to start

What model NL genset are we trying to start, I had assumed it was in the 5-15 kva group with the Shibaura engine but if it's in the heavy duty series with John Deere engines my comments will not...

Re: Cant get Nothern Lights Generator to start

If you can get fuel out of the high pressure lines by rotating the engine with the starter motor, tighten the nuts and use the preheat/ glowplug position on the keyswitch. The preheat is very...

Re: Wintering over in the South of France

Port Napoleon marina at Port st Louis du Rhône is an excellent safe place to leave your boat. I've kept mine there on the dry between seasons for the past 4 years, rates are low and service is first...

Re: VP MD2040D Throttle Spring

That looks like you got it right in your photo and matches belizesailors diagram in the link. The next tricky part is getting the oil pump static plate to line up with the roll pin in the timing...

Re: cmarks

The link Gordmay posted is very informative and the SD 20 is a really good Saildrive. Some folding propellers for saildrives have a rubber element between the hub and propeller as an anti shock...

Re: Gearbox Mechanic in Singapore

You might try a phone call to Scott Walker at "North American Diesel services" +65 8338 5133. He is more into superyachts and Lugger engines but might be able to recommend a local mechanic. There is...

Re: Shibaura parts for Lugger (and other) engines

Hi OP
I have 2 x NL643 gen sets of different ages but both have perkins/shibaura engines. Try "parts4engines.com" in U.K. My engines are both 67 mm bore which corresponds to a perkins 103-7 ....but...

Re: Water in Yanmar SD20 saildrive

With seal changes on two separate occasions it seems unlikely that the water is entering there, especially with the new shaft and o rings and residual water or contaminated oil is unlikely given that...

Re: Which Engine

Hello Dougieji
The Yanmar 4JH series has a very good low...er rpm 54 hp engine that's a good fit for a TMD22 replacement and Beta will supply their Kubota marinisation with the exact same footprint...

Re: Stray current corroded saildrives

Good question and I don't fully understand the precise definition but I would describe ordinary corrosion as occurring where saltwater simply drips onto a metal surface and eats into that surface but...

Re: Stray current corroded saildrives

My condolences to the OP re the loss of the sail drives to what appears to be electrolysis, it seems to be fairly common on boats in langkawi with no common thread linking the events. A recent SD 50...

Re: Hot stuffing box, leaky stuffing box. Is there an in-between?

It might be time to check the alignment of the shaft/ coupling/ gearbox flange. It's a good idea to check whether the propeller shaft is centered in the sterntube at the time of reassembly. An...

Re: 2 cylinder yanmar help

Yep , feel your pain and admire your tenacity. Ok, on the black smoke issue, this is a long shot but very easy to resolve. If the engine driven alternator output becomes uncontrolled for any reason...

Re: fix bent rudder shaft (whale damage)

Possibly the most important part of your boat is that spade rudder and if you use your boat for more than just bay/day sailing then it needs to be beyond reproach. As a previous post suggested, it's...

Re: 2 cylinder yanmar help

Re: 2 cylinder yanmar help

There's another possibility .....when the injector pump was reinstalled , the fuel control pin on the pump rack must enter a small yoke that connects the pump to the governor. If the pin misses the...

Re: Bore Honing Without Engine Removal

Buying a borescope might not be the best idea, I've got a couple of them and seem to mainly use em for finding dropped tools in bilges and looking inside fuel and water tanks, never into cylinders....

Re: Bore Honing Without Engine Removal

Seemingly the 4JH3 is about the only one in the 4JH series with no liners. The cylinder is cast into the block, not a wet sleeve.I'll read back through the other posts to see if there's an easier...

Re: Bore Honing Without Engine Removal

Hi Dockhead, I rebuild Yanmars on regular basis and am surprised that so far no mention has been made of replacing the liners, on most of the 4JH series they just slide right out with minimal effort....
