Re: Solar Panels for Marine Use

12 volts doesn't charge a battery - 14.4 volts does.

A 15 amp controller would work but would be marginal. A 20 amp controller would be a better choice. Even larger - 30 amps - would leave room...

Re: Alternator does not Fully Charge the Batteries

Wrong. Any lead acid battery - flooded, gel, or agm - requires a long time to charge completely as the battery's resistance increases. The last 15% or so takes many hours. There is no magical way...

Re: Solar Panels for Marine Use

A Victron - BMV-600 - is probably the best buy in a monitor.

The Smartgauge is unique in that it will get more accurate over time while all other monitors will become less accurate at showing...

Re: ABYC and Batteries

They should fit but remember the 6 volt batteries are taller - about 11" depending on type of post.

Re: ABYC and Batteries

Yes, eventually but it will take longer. Voltage is pressure.

Re: ABYC and Batteries

I agree. Part of the problem with widely separated batteries in the same bank is charging. Even 3% drop will mean that 14.4 at the close battery will mean less than 14 volts at the far battery. It's...

Re: Using generator power system with inverter

Any inverter with a pass through will have a clearly labeled AC input and AC output.

Re: ABYC and Batteries

Fuse size has to do with wire gauge and load - not length of run.

For example 2/0 wire (ampacity of 281 amps in engine spaces) and a load of say 175 amps you fuse between the two. Maybe 225 amp...

Re: ABYC and Batteries

I'm confused - are you saying to fuse the negative? Nothing standard about that.

You fuse the positive wire only, the fuse sized between expected max load and wire ampacity. The 24' of negative...

Re: ABYC and Batteries

Why? You only fuse the positive - the negatives do not need fusing.

Re: My 12v set up

I don'y think that is necessary really. If you are using 16 awg wire for the run to the light from the panel fuse for that, not the 3" or 4" of smaller wire at the led itself.

Re: ABYC and batteries

ABYC doesn't require a fuse for a DEDICATED start battery. If the batteries are selected by a 1/2/both switch neither bank is a dedicated start battery as it can be used for house loads and therefore...

Re: Lavranos 40

I don't know the boat but Lavranos is a talented designer. He has designed some of the earlier Deerfoot boats for Steve Dashew, who speaks highly of Lavranos and recommends him.

They probably work ok until you hit something and knock them off.

Re: Anyone heard of Gary Maul?

A full keel boat doesn't have a skeg - the rudder is attached to the aft end of the keel. A fin keel, usually of medium length, often has a skeg hung rudder.

Re: My 12v set up

Yes, if running distributed panels I would size the wire for 3% drop or less at max panel load. But I wouldn't fuse for max panel load but somewhere between panel load and wire ampacity. For a 30 amp...

Re: My 12v set up

The good news is that the pigtail is short, and I agree if it can be shortened further it is better. I use heat shrink connectors and slip a long piece of heatshrink over the whole section if the...

Re: My 12v set up

Depends totally on the wire size. You fuse for the wire size not the load. Any quality panel I have installed or come across has 14 gauge wire and each circuit that is loaded with a fuse or breaker...

Re: Outback 60 with partially shaded panels

For a 36 cell panel there are usually 2 bypass diodes. Still adds up to a loss if multiple panels are in series. Parallel doesn't have any issues with current from one panel passing a shaded panel.

Re: Outback 60 with partially shaded panels

Wired in series a shaded panel is a roadblock. Not unlike the old series Christmas tree bulbs. Parallel will not stop a good output panel from passing through the connections of a shaded panel. In...

Re: Outback 60 with partially shaded panels

Series works well on land where the panels can be installed with no shading issues. In any installation with shading parallel is the choice to make. Shading a series array kills it. Shading a...

Re: My 12v set up

You are correct it doesn't make sense and can be 20 to 30% less efficient to use an inverter for laptops. Best to use the laptop manufacturers dc adaptor or a generic one.

Re: Battery bank sizes on sail boats

Blue Seas ACR or any other ACR parallels the batteries - no control over voltage.
