Re: Cruisair Burning Smell When Heating

Yeah, I am pretty sure it is a reverse cycle unit. I am not aware of a "heat tape system at the fan blower"

Cruisair Burning Smell When Heating

I have a single 12,000 btu unit with ducting to rear cabin, v-berth, and of course the salon. Air flow is good and the unit heated well for about 12 hours solid last week until I started smelling...

Re: Installing seal in waterpump

I made a wood jig with a hole saw so that I could tap the pump apart. Thanks for the reminder as it is time for me to change my seals. I didn't get to them soon enough and lost a pump a year and...

Re: Oil Change Trick

Only a few hours on the new oil but I am amazed at the clarity. Not dark at all. No kill-joys needed as I realize that I am not materially improving oil performance. But I will "waste" a fifth of...

Oil Change Trick

Not sure this is a good one or not but today as I was nearing the end of oil extraction via the dipstick tube, I poured about a fifth of a quart of fresh 15W-40 into the oil fill and continued...

Re: Ok To Skip Bottom Paint For 1 Season?

I will almost get 3 years out of my bottom job. I used great paint and I have the bottom cleaned regularly (in water via me or a diver).

Re: Dehumidifier - will it make a difference?

I don't have a winter situation to deal with but my dehumidifier works wonders to make the boat more comfortable. When I sail I unplug it and lay it down in the head in the shower area out of the...

Re: Fender or barge boards

Now that I think about it, I don't think my board is composite; I think it is vinyl which is why it is so light. Makes it easy to dig out of the lazarette. It bends a bit but I use three 6.5" x 22"...

Re: Fender or barge boards

I use a white composite board about 4 long. I hang the board off of the loops of the fender whips via carabiners which makes it easy to hang in the middle of the fender. The composite is light and...

Maine Cat 30

Well now I am looking at Maine Cat. I am trying to find a fun to sail cat that can get under 50' bridges yet still be able to deal with GOM waves so I can avoid the GICW whenever possible. I want...

Gemini Legacy 35

Does anyone have any opinion re a newer Legacy 35? The wife would like a cat and a Gemini seems to have some theoretical strengths for coastal enjoyment.

Re: Saialing from pcb,fl to galveston

When I did it the opposite way I got well offshore to avoid all the shallow rigs. As I see it there is no reason to get close to the shallow rigs off of LA. It is the weather you need to be...

Fender whips; how important is the spliced loop?

Apologies in the advance for such a trivial post but I am curious to know from those wiser than I if the spliced loop in the standard 6' fender whip has any better function than a bowline? I am...

Re: 12v vs 6v in 2nd bank

I have had good luck with Interstate 6v GC batts. And they give good service should there be a problem.

Re: When to remove all canvases?

For Irma, I moved 100 miles west away from storm and outside of tropical storm warning area which included my home marina. The forecast was for 35 - 40 mph winds sustained, which means higher for...

Raw water belt on Yanmar 3YM30

Before my 500 nm Gulf crossing I thought it wise to have a "pro" help look over my engine and do maintenance including new belts. I just assumed he'd bring the right type for my engine. I never did...

Re: Gooseneck Nut Comes Undone

I have similar setup with a lock nut and early on in owning boat I noticed it was either backing off or never sufficiently threaded on. I haven't had a repeated problem but I check it frequently...

Re: Value of a USCG Captain's License?

I was too young in college to enjoy all the partying and debauchery apparently available.

Sorry about that; I think I made a good effort to count for perhaps 2 or 3 people.

Re: Value of a USCG Captain's License?

I went to a very good university and got good grades; other than allowing me to get a job 31 years ago, I feel my college diploma is nearly worthless in practical terms as the education I received...

Re: Why is there no VHF mike near helm of charter sailboat

I have improved performance of my cockpit mic by cleaning and lubing contacts so there is a tiny bit of maintenance involved.

Re: Yanmar 3GM30 Belt changing

It is very important not to over tighten belt as it will kill your new water pump bearings.
