Re: Is length of antenna for MF/HF frequencies (Rx only) important?

There’s no way around it... you’ll have to start with morse code at 8wpm, then go from there [emoji23]

Re: IPad for Navigation FAQ 2018

We’re back to as simple as possible: just one multi function B&G display + autopilot panel in the cockpit (no plotter, no compass, no iPad). For handsteering the single display has several modes that...

200nm/day - What's it Really Take???

Our Sundeer does plane but we lower the main to prevent that and have more comfort at night. Only once, during a heavy squall just north of Grenada, we started planing without the main up, helped by...

Re: 200nm/day - What's it Really Take???

Okay, let me add the Sundeer side to this subject. We have a 64' waterline and the only thing we need for a 200nm day is a 15+kts wind. This is easy as in the boat on autopilot tending to herself...

Re: Printers on Board

+1
for some gear, throwing $$$ at the problem makes all the difference. Our ip100 has outlasted the 5 printers we had before it. I believe there is a newer model now, but the current one keeps going...

Re: Are Speed Logs and Wind Speed Instruments Obsolete?

STW: I sure hope that my autopilot uses this to determine how much rudder to apply for corrections. A length of rope with knots tied in sure isn't gonna tell my AP the current STW. Now we're gonna...

Re: Iridium Next

Yes at the current rate it should take 5 more launches to get 66 satellites of the new constellation up. I will have to decide within 6 months and think there will be no new products yet at that time...

Re: Maretron vs. Airmar Ultrasonic Wind

The original problem was that the unit completely filled up with water. Very easy to determine: it weighs 10x as much and the point of ingress shows by a slow drip. It was the weld of the two halves...

Re: Maretron vs. Airmar Ultrasonic Wind

You pulled my quote out of context. I said they fixed the waterproofing where, in the past, some filled up with water, the new ones don't do that anymore.

Re: Maretron vs. Airmar Ultrasonic Wind

I'm sorry for countering but you really are wrong. The Maretron USB100 was out long before the Actisense NGT. The Maretron does not have Mac drivers because they aren't needed: the Mac just works, no...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I am extremely happy with my Maxwell cone clutch but noticed that many don't use a clutch at all (they use electric down which I only use for short adjustments). I think my cone clutch is direct on...

Re: Are Speed Logs and Wind Speed Instruments Obsolete?

Wow, 44 actually agrees with me in this thread :-) and meanwhile, we can keep discovering new levels of ignorance on windvanes and autopilots from some. We now even got to the level where they...

Re: Are Speed Logs and Wind Speed Instruments Obsolete?

What is clear from this thread is that very few people have an autopilot that steers to a wind angle. At the same time, I see no comments about having a windvane steering setup so we must assume they...

Re: Maretron vs. Airmar Ultrasonic Wind

Three points: Maretron has fixed the weatherproofing of their product. There may still be problems but my replacement sensor is still okay. Often the trouble is around the humidity sensor and Airmar...

Re: Are Speed Logs and Wind Speed Instruments Obsolete?

If it is a choice like the OP explains, then sure, I see the charm in that and we agree on everything.

That said, I see other people posting that they can do without wind instruments because they...

Re: Epoxy or Polyester as I replace large sections of Deck Core

Exactly. Don't do the "I got 1.5 gallons of epoxy, what can I do with that" approach but rather "how much of which product do I need to fix this?" :thumb:

Re: Are Speed Logs and Wind Speed Instruments Obsolete?

I am pretty sure that none of the members here that post they don't need instruments (that it is for space age freaks etc.) sail in areas with significant currents and tides.

I have sailed the...

Re: Are Speed Logs and Wind Speed Instruments Obsolete?

For upwind sailing of anything more than a daysail you need STW and Apparent Wind direction. Wind speed is required for decisions on sail area, reefing as well as adjusting weather forecasts.

What...
