Grand Banks thought about producing a motor sailing version of its trawler design. Was not only ugly as h*&%, but as you said, was the worst of both worlds.

Recommended you run at 3/4 throttle under load. But commercial diesels run slow anyways, about 300 rpm. And with all the stuff on board, almost always under some load(generators, prop, winches, etc)....

True, they are relatively flat V hulls rather than the deep rounded bottoms found in deep water commercial trawlers. Virtually all the "yachty" trawlers are just lumbering shoe boxes. Lots of room...
