Re: Getting ready to start Cruising, what about a car?

Dunno... one scenario Iím looking at is to keep the Jeep and an expedition trailer for overland cruising during the sailing off-season.

But... it would probably have to be in secure storage...

Re: Batteries really do explode.

Yeah, we made batteries in 7th grade physics class and I was standing next to the bench when a whole row of them blew up. :o First permanent hearing loss - one of those Halmark Moments.

Re: Advice needed for a sewing machine

Last time I looked, most of those "generic" machines of the same design used by Sailrite had disappeared from the usual places on-line. Or their prices were greatly increased. I wonder if there was...

Re: Surprising Tools You Can't Live Without

Hmm... “surprise” tools. They tend to be tools needed for only ONE (1) application on board. And the only way to find out is the hard way. Then you have to remember why they’re on board and...

Re: Advice on Outboard Choice (HP) for Dinghy (Family of 4 - 2 small kids)

Well that is a fair question, but presumably the answer is "someone who's boat is only rated for 9.9 HP." If you do a bit of shopping, you see that there is virtually no difference in weight and...

Re: WARNING--Shipping Containers Adrift off N. Carolina Coast

Several containers full of sneakers sank off the Oregon coast a few years ago. Nikes were washing up on the beach for months. It was kind of a game with beachcombers to put together as many...

Re: Advice on Outboard Choice (HP) for Dinghy (Family of 4 - 2 small kids)

Iíve got a 20 year old air floor 340 - next size up, rated for 15 HP. Iíve got a 9.9 on it and seriously, have never opened the throttle more than half way. As mentioned above, it is a bit more...

Re: AVON Valise 6 man life raft

Hmm... Wish I'd gotten interested in this a month ago - too many spring time projects open now.
I found this:

Re: AVON Valise 6 man life raft

Worth nothing. Cannot be repacked at any price because the factory parts needed for recertification are no longer made.
If free, it might make an interesting weekend project to open and attempt...

Re: Raymarine wind sensor 300mm or 600mm

In part, it depends on what other impedimenta you have up there. Windex? Antennae? Tricolor light? Jib Crane? Make a scaled drawing, including turning radius of things that move and some radius...

Re: Do I really need more than my KISS ground

The OP signature line puts his home port on the Hudson River. My understanding (from asking similar questions) is that the Dynaplate won't do much good as an RF ground while in fresh water... ?

Re: Dinghy Motor Size

Last weekend, CraigsList provided me a 9.9 4-stroke Johnson (Suzuki) for the Zodiac 340. Oddly, I don't really notice the extra 30 pounds, yet. But it certainly is a joy, so far. Although my old...

Re: Need Help Identifying This Please

Looks like a snatch block, but is there something else special about it?
Actually, I can't tell, does the cheek open so you can put it on without threading the line from the end?

Re: Taking an extended work break

I had perfect opportunities to disengage from the rat race at 35 and 45, but somehow, just couldn't see them at the time and scrambled to jump back on the wheel. Well, water under the bridge and...

Re: First Aid/Medications - Where and How Do You Store Them?

Well, I have a plan, though it is several "projects" down the list. I think it will actually be a kind of fun project. My boat is just too small to have duplicative regular and emergency stores. ...

Re: Land/dock cart - what do you use?

Another category to search would be "folding shopping trolley," as in many countries, people cart their groceries home on foot....

Re: Land/dock cart - what do you use?

I've seen that somewhere... Home Depot? Costco? Looked more like lightweight luggage in person - too much load-bearing plastic. Probably would handle more than the milk crate thing, though.

I...

Re: Land/dock cart - what do you use?

I got a cart similar to above but with smaller wheels at Costco for about $50. Even so, it takes up a fair amount of room on board.

In some closet, I've got one of those folding-milkcrate...

Re: How many flares?

The SOLAS parachute flares expire after four years. I buy one every winter. Shoot one off on New Years Eve. Four flares in the rack. Some of the other blinky things are just for compliance.

Re: Most hazardous area for navigation in continental US?

The Columbia Bar not only has the physical hazards, it has the commercial traffic as well - everyone rushes to get through during the hours that it's open. On top of that, Buoy 10 is the legal border...

I recently experimented with replacing a small grating with fiberglass catwalk grating. (Like the ramp to our dock.) Comes in many colors, tough, no maintenance... The verdict is that this grid...

My old main is so old, it has one of those 70's zippers to open up the belly. There must be some neat project I could do with that part. The part with the emblem and sail number might make a good...
