Re: California tax on transiting boat

I had a similar request on sales tax from the state of California on a boat purchased overseas but with a California mailing address for the registration. They want wanted proof the boat had not been...

Re: FK Rigging, St. Maarten or suggestions for Leopard 45 rigging replacement

I have used them for couple of rigging projects and they were great. While my projects didn't involving pulling the mast, I saw they had some very large yacht rigging replacement project underway.

Re: Anyone with Experience in Grenada / Grenadines?

I recommend you get Chris Doyle's Windwards guide, he details most of the places to do customs. The Grenadines had lots of great places to explore, have a great trip!

Re: Dimensions for solar

Here is an example of what that looks like. Notice the extra support for the panels used to support the ends. The coach roof is very weak behind the traveller. It might be okay without the support,...

Re: Dimensions for solar

Using the Sunpower panels is a good suggestion, but you probably should consider adding some support for the 16" hanging off the back of the roof. The traveller to the end of the flat section of roof...

Re: Dimensions for solar

I'll be happy to give you some measurements, but please narrow down where you are considering. My solar is behind the traveler. That is a good spot, but limits how many watts you can have unless you...

Re: Sail Drive/Hull Internal Rubber Boot

On the Goiot escape hatches, the bezel can come out of the frame, it is only glued onto the frame with silicone. Then you have a 3 sq ft hole in the side of your boat.

Re: Proper shutdown/start sequence with a Maxprop?

I have chatted with PYI (maxprop distributor) about the right technique for feathering. Stop engine in forward, speed isn't that important (typically I'm going 7 knots under sail with the engine in...

Re: Sailing from Santa Barbra to Houston

As part of your planning, research California sales tax law to be sure you don't end up paying sales tax. If you spend too much time in California waters you will owe nearly 9% tax. They take the...

Re: Karver Gaff Lock experience?

I'm still using the original soft shackle that it came with. We have done maybe 4000 blue water miles and no significant chafing, although I do carry a backup. Interesting to know a hard shackle...

Re: Karver Gaff Lock experience?

I have one for my FP 44 with a square top sail. The quick answer is it works great. Only issue with mine is the halyard is slightly too large in diameter to slide easily through the gaff lock. The...

Re: Escape Hatch Failure

Here is a photo of the hatch repair. My long term fix will be similar with an aluminum bar instead of wood. We glued blocks of plastic with bolts and the bolts are attached to the plastic. Our backup...

Re: Escape Hatch Failure

The yard where I hauled out had lots of cats on the hard and I toured many of them looking at escape hatches. It seemed to me the lagoon hatch has an aluminum frame glassed into the boat, but the...

Re: Escape Hatch Failure

As a follow up, the boat is mine; Gémeaux hull #16. The hatch is a Gioit escape hatch. The hatch's aluminum frame is screwed to hull with 22 screws but the plexiglass pane is only glued with silicone...

Hi

My ecocruising panel also died due to a lightning strike. Got no response from FP on replacing it, so it replaced it with two Blue Seas M2 panels, one for tank levels and one for current...

Re: RF Noise or interference from LED bulbs

I have a Signal Mate tricolor and it definitely effects the ais reception. I can't hear any noise on vhf radio, but ais signals are much lower power (2 watts vs 25 watts) , so they are more likely...
