Re: Anti foul, bottom paint, soft, medium or hard?

Hard paints cannot withstand prolonged exposure to air, making them unsuitable for boats that live on trailers.

Re: Anti foul, bottom paint, soft, medium or hard?

Looks like your boat could be painted here in Alameda for just over $3300US. That includes materials and labor.

Re: Anti foul, bottom paint, soft, medium or hard?

Well, you need an ablative, that's the first thing. But I do not deal with trailerable boats in my business, so maybe others here can give a specific product that will work well for you. I am...

Re: Anti foul, bottom paint, soft, medium or hard?

Micron Extra can't hold a candle to Micron 66, IMHO. I have never come across another ablative paint (although to be fair, Micron 66 is a "hybrid" ablative) that has the anti fouling properties of...

Re: New System for Hull Cleaning Afloat

Show me where divers are not complying with pollution laws.

Also, this particular robotic hull cleaner may collect the "debris" (whatever that means) but I guarantee it is not...

Re: Anti foul, bottom paint, soft, medium or hard?

The only two paints I ever recommend are Pettit Trinidad SR and Interlux Micron 66, regardless of what kind of boat they are going on. Not that there aren't other paints out there that offer good...

Re: Anti foul, bottom paint, soft, medium or hard?

Do not discard the idea of using an ablative simply because you clean the hull. Properly maintained, ablatives can give good performance regardless. But in a high-fouling region, it is not reasonable...

Re: Anti foul, bottom paint, soft, medium or hard?

A few things to consider when choosing anti fouling paint:

1.- A hard paint will be more durable and stand up to in-water cleaning (if that's something you do) better than an ablative

2.- In...

Re: Anti foul, bottom paint, soft, medium or hard?

Except that Ultra isn't made by Pettit and is not an ablative paint.

Re: NOAA Drones Busting Boaters

Eff 'em. If they're out there breaking the law, they deserve to be busted.

Re: Best Bottom Cleaning Tool?

Depends on what your definition of "scrubbing" is. Frequent, gentle cleaning will dramatically extend your paint's lifespan. Less frequent, abrasive cleaning (or scrubbing) absolutely will remove...

Re: Best Bottom Cleaning Tool?

When cleaned before the bottom gets even moderately foul, you should never have to put anything more abrasive than the white pad on the paint for most of the paint's life.

3M Doodlebug pads...

Re: eboatworks.com for bottom paint?

The fouling conditions in the PNW are pretty tame compared to the Bay Area (where I assume your boat is) and anti fouling paints that work well there may not here. Further, I put little stock in...

Re: eboatworks.com for bottom paint?

No experience with it. That's why I asked. Nobody uses it here. Don't be the guinea pig; is my advice.

Why do you want to use Blue Water? And which product are you thinking of?

Re: Sail Drives, The Good, The Bad and Ugly

Yanmar & Volvo saildrive legs both have 2-piece zincs that can replaced without pulling the prop. Other saildrives do not.

Re: Reboring and Rekeying a Prop

I have called a prop shop (the largest one on the West Coast, BTW) and asked them this very question. But as an aircraft mechanic, you clearly know everything there is to know about boat propellers...

Re: Reboring and Rekeying a Prop

Do yourself a favor- call your local propeller repair facility and ask them what they think. Please be sure to report back here when you've been re-educated.

Re: Reboring and Rekeying a Prop

Sure. But what it is depends on if you listen to people who do this work for a living or if you listen to someone who heard it from a guy in the yard who heard from the old salt down the dock who...

Re: Reboring and Rekeying a Prop

Knowledgeable professionals do not put anything on the mating surfaces of the prop and shaft prior to installation. But hey- knock yourself out. It's your prop.

Re: Reboring and Rekeying a Prop

Umm... sorry, but yes, it is true. Whatever its purpose, you don't want anything between the mating surfaces. The prop is not supposed to come off easily. That's the whole point.
