Re: Hurricane staying aboard

My boat was Florida based and my only home for 45 years. I made different choices at different times,- 'never purposefully kept our children aboard in a major tropical storm, but we were surprised...

Re: How do you kedge?

We've done a lot of gunkholing among the shallows and managed to find a need for kedging off numerous times. I had a few thoughts to present, but I noticed that HankOnthewater covered them all.

Re: How Long Do You Own a Boat?

I guess my wife and I made a poor choice with our first liveaboard boat because it only had an 8' beam and I could not stand up inside of it. It was a swift Sparkman & Stephens designed Whitney 30,...

Re: Outboard Water not exhausting much

The next best step, for me, would be to go ahead and replace the impeller. This is not a very complex fix and you can follow some YouTube instruction videos for support. There is a possibility of...

Re: Outboard Water not exhausting much

Keep in mind that the higher visible water stream is not the cooling water itself, but an indicator that the cooling water is working. It's quite common for this indicator stream to be clogged with a...

Re: USCG master - worth having? benefits?

I don't know if the required expenses for acquiring the masters license have increased over the years, but when I obtained the equivalent "ocean operator's license", as this was called in 1976, the...

Re: Do you use a Captainís Log??

We always kept two logs that were bound generic ledgers or journals.

We filled eight "deck logs" over our years cruising that recorded our locations, weather, crew aboard and events. These deck...

Re: We are about to buy a live aboard and navigate the icw. YIKES!

From 1972 until 2016 my wife and I made about two dozen transits of the ICW. Here are some practices that worked well for us:
1. We like easy days without urgent deadlines,- sunrise departures and...

Hello to all my good friends on the Cruisers Forum and to all those new here within the last year and a half since I sold my boat. Nancie and I have been adapting to a life ashore. She has done well...

Re: looking for marine surveyor

I think the most experienced surveyor in the area would be Jim Campbell of Campbell Marine Surveying, Inc, Orange Park, Fl. - (904)868-1609

Re: "What make the perfect boat woman...perfect"

The best offer to be made by all, - everything is negotiable. It's all "on the table" and open for discussion. 'no ultimatums. All wants, needs and desires are taken seriously.

Re: Favorite modification/hack for liveaboards?

I'm with you! When I said "deal with the dock lines and power cord....", I was thinking of leaving them at the dock. We could usually get away before the engine warmed.

Re: Favorite modification/hack for liveaboards?

'maybe not a modification or a hack, but an important behavior for me as a liveaboard was to always keep my boat ready for leaving the dock. There's little reason to live aboard a boat if you...

Re: Single Men Living Aboard and Cruising... an honest look.

Hey pirateress, I knew that you meant "Thread", but I couldn't resist playing with the mistake. Humor can be risky on a forum because it's sometimes misinterpreted; however, a bit of laughter is...

Re: Favorite modification/hack for liveaboards?

As always, you need the surface prepared well by removing any loose materials or oils. It's a little expensive, but the 3M VHB is fantastic for cohesion.

Re: Liveaboard budget-looking for your feedback

Your showing us much of your own wisdom by recognizing all these variables. It can be seen that all these same variables hold true for those living in houses instead of boats. After living aboard...

Re: Favorite modification/hack for liveaboards?

My favorite modification was the use of 3M's VHB tape to refit my portlights.

Re: Texas live aboard 23 foot long

This seems like a valid restriction to me, especially with the composting head option.

Re: Texas live aboard 23 foot long

Rwidman makes a good point about the minimum length charge for a slip. I can certainly accept the minimum charge; however, the minimum length, despite the charge, is something that has begun to creep...

Re: Catamaran parking in southern Florida

I used to squeak under I-95 to spend some time at "Marina Bay" Marina, but that was some years ago. Is that no longer a liveaboard option? I agree with the Nurmi Isles choices. I've also spent some...
