Re: Is it crazy to sail BVI in summer?

Not that you are looking for advice but after your comment on crew would only suggest to put your "Captain" to the test before you are far from land with him. Have run across several "Captains" that...

Re: Is it crazy to sail BVI in summer?

Ha I understand however storms can come up quickly.
By that plan I assume you will be on the boat the entire summer?

Insurance companies are a big PITA however a necessity.
I tried getting...

Re: Is it crazy to sail BVI in summer?

Because of insurance issues (been there) have you thought about going further south just for the summer then returning to the BVI's in the winter?
Say maybe Grenada or even better Curacao.

Re: Film "The Mercy" (Donald Crowhurst Story)

FWIW: Just a little bit more history on this boat if anyone is interested. Probably not many people know this story so I will tell it.

After Crowhurst "left" his boat it floated around in the...

Re: Chinese made sails......

All Neil Pryde sails are manufactured in China and the Philippines.
Used them for 15 years on my 50 ft ketch. When I sold the boat the sails were still in excellent shape. Had many ocean miles from...

Re: Instruments set to True or Apparent wind?

Yes I would certainly agree with what you have said however specifically in sailing angles with an asym.
I think the difference lies DDW with a symmetrical which is different.
Doesn't it relate to...

Re: Instruments set to True or Apparent wind?

Well I agree with some of these statements especially as I stated previously that TWA (if it is accurate) is a fantastic tool to use for knowing when to gybe when DDW. However personally if I watched...

Re: Instruments set to True or Apparent wind?

I honestly doubt "most" cruising boats wind instruments are accurate enough to really believe TW readings. Therefore AW is fine. However on Race boats with calibrated instruments knowing the TWA when...

Re: Abacos or Cuba

agree with wayne.b
I have found supplies in the Exumas adequate but certainly not in abundance. I kept my boat there durning winters for two seasons and had a wonderful time.
Several stores on...

Re: Abacos or Cuba

I have sailed to Cuba twice.
Cienfuegos is an interesting town mostly for it's architecture. The harbor is very large and well protected but rather boring. For your time allotment I could only...

Sorry JACA I have no experience with that route.
We came up from Curacao to Jamaica then Caymans and Cuba then back to Cayman.

Re: Cayo Largo to Caymans

Have done it twice and most of the time it will be off wind providing you are actually coming from Cuba and not just rounding from the west end.
Obviously check weather before leaving but it is a no...

This is the East River at night.
I would caution not to depend on land based AIS such as Marine Traffic in the East River as someone mentioned in a previous post. It is way too slow...

I have been up and down the East River many times over the years and agree with kerrydeare in that background lighting makes it difficult not only to see markers but also navigational lights.
