Re: Civil Asset Forfeiture ... A Civil Discussion ....

IIRC, During the Reagan years, DEA actually attempted to seize the entire RV Atlantis, (Mother Ship to the Alvin Submarine) over residue in a pipe found in a crewman's bunk. (They couldn't seize...

Re: Tips for rebuilding a fridge from the top

Only a counter-recommendation. Home Depot sells a special (DAP brand?) glue for foam, in the insulation section. I used it when hyper=insulating my hot tub. FAIL. Not suitable for moist locations.

Re: living aboard in PDX

Good luck. I looked pretty hard at a Ranger 28 - I thought it was a bit tight for a cruiser or live aboard. Maybe for a really short person... Also they seem a bit too lightly built as they are...

Re: $300 old liferaft, or $2300 new?

The only reason I can see to buy an inflatable liferaft is if one is planning to sail some place where the bureaucracy requires a "certified life raft." (e.g. Argentina). Maybe if I had kids on...

Re: Full keel vs fin keel for offshore?

Anecdotes can be found about boats lost due to damaged spade rudders. As owner of one, I ponder the rudder shaft log... not only is it inaccessible behind the liner, but unlike the bow area, it is...

Re: Equipment list for Pacific crossing

Those prices seem a bit high. Be patient, keep watching Craigslist and Ebay. Don't be afraid to make a few lowball offers (or to have them rejected). I thought I would build some of these things...

Re: New boat name

Precisely the reason that my brother and I have crisp little names. Both of my parents had trouble spelling their own names as children.

I'm somewhat intrigued by names like "Office."...

Re: Worldly Possessions

A lot of the stuff that filled my house 20 years ago now all fits inside a laptop computer.

The workshop tools are the main thing that I can't transfer to the boat. It has occurred to me to...

Re: living aboard in PDX

There are dozens of places closer in where you can anchor. But the new state law is that you have to move every 30 days, at least 5 miles away. And you can't return to the previous spot for a year. ...

Re: living aboard in PDX

Yes, downstream toward St. Helens. I used to be in Scappoose Bay, which was very, very casual. Though bus service to Portland was kind of minimal.
If you go all the way to the Pacific, there seem...

Re: living aboard in PDX

The farther you go down Multnomah Channel, the cheaper and more available get the slips. There's a brand new marina on the 'Couve side of the river, but I suspect it's rather expensive.

Re: Multiple types of antennas for SSB

I didn't see if you mentioned what kind of radio you have/had, but it sounds like you might be describing a DSC receive antenna, which is required for DSC functions of the M802.

Re: Is yacht theft common?

I once took a dubious craigslist-acquired dinghy to the state patrol office to be inspected. The marine officer showed me their impound lot with half a dozen boats in it. Mostly expensive-looking...

Re: Current state of affairs for HF

Well, exactly. So many people are dumping their HF sets that with a bit of patience, you can put together a SSB installation from EBay and/or Craigslist for about a kilobuck. Which is probably less...

Re: SeaTalk interferes with SSB on certain freqs

This thread is interesting to me, since I have kind of the same sort of interference but also different. It is definitely the Sea Talk bus making a rhythmic pattern of "clicks," but is stronger at...

Re: Blog vs Website or Facebook?

Like Mike, I own my own domains for my businesses, but have not used one for personal material. I will set one up one of these days soon.
Another peril of using someone else's "free" service is...

Re: Vberth Workbench Conversion in progress

Hmm... off-the-shelf plastic milk crates might do some of that and serve as shelving units too. I think there are pictures somewhere on line, but as an example, Bob Perry's new carbon cutters have a...

Re: Vberth Workbench Conversion in progress

I have gone back and forth on this idea several times. Giving up the workshop/laboratory is one of the main things I'd have to overcome to move aboard full time.

I've drawn, but not built, a...

Yes, in the 60's even in Hicksville USA, the distributor used to drop by every week and exchange wooden crates of beer and soda bottles for full ones.

On the other hand, I seem to recall Belize in...

Re: disposing of OOD flares

I suspect the issue is more analogous to the Takata airbags - when they start to absorb moisture, the propellant can get "lumpy" and not burn evenly, but partially explode instead. Just like the 12...

Re: Plastic

Years ago, I bought a stack of a dozen plastic shopping baskets. The stack lives in the garage, but there is usually one in each vehicle and a couple on the boat. It seems obvious: you use them in...

ASA Weather Endorsement

Who has or has opinions on the ASA Weather course? Is there any actual utility to having this "certification" as opposed to just learning on your own?
There's a course open in my area next weekend....

Re: Misc. Galley Questions

One note on the nesting pots - unless you are cooking for six, they (Magma) seem to be too large for me, and mostly waste space on board. The most expensive set has some smaller sizes, but they are...
