Re: It's About Cutters

The only advantage I can see on the gaf is lowering the center of effort of a lot of sail. More work, cost etc as noted. We have a cutter rigged Ketch. The mizzen is useful on certain points &...

Re: Bottom Cleaning in the Water

We have added a Brownie Hookah for fun & bottom cleaning. Do it often and it isn't too bad. In the Great Lakes, every weekend to race or every month to cruise. Its only algae slime here.

Re: Small Vessel Reporting System

Heading the other way, we cruised for several weeks in the North Channel of Lake Huron. The Canadians & officials were especially polite and accommodating. We had the nicest time. I hear the US...

Re: What Is This Called? Traditional Wheel Position?

Here is another photo of a traditional steering. The wheel was large to facilitate the forces necessary to control the rudder. The hub (horizontal capstan) was likewise large and the steering line...

Re: Can't find a good sweater..

I still have a massively heavy grey wool sweater I've saved for just the right times. It was given to me 40 years ago. I was told it was British Navy issue. Its is in great shape. I found a lot...

Re: Best Online Battery Cable Source

Our boat is 1984. Some tinned and some not. Moisture & its corrosive effects, given time, permeate the insulation. Makes no difference how the ends were terminated. We find blackened copper all...

Re: Peeling a Hull

Not exactly true. Here is how we managed it. I was able to borrow chains and ratchets for load securing on truck-trailers. I placed the modified tops of four tall tack stands (borrowed from the...

Re: Which solar panels- best / where to buy

We bought 3 sanyo HIT 220 watt panels about 3 years ago. 18 % efficient. Higher efficiency means smaller panels or more watts. The new stuff gets better every year. The old panels from only about...

Re: Peeling a Hull

From my experience, you may find the rudder requires a total rebuild or at least a re-core. If the skin is OK but interior is crap, you can make a few windows, dig out the krud and refill using...

Re: Shore power

I have to agree with that, especially if you are only running a couple of light loads. Wort that can happen is the cord gets warm - but probably not.

Re: Prop Rope Cutter

I doubt the various ducted props will avoid pullin lines in also. Here is a tutorial on the various types and their advantages. The shroud reduces the trailing vortex off the blade tips & so...

Re: How to get rust off stainless steel

Home Depot (and others) carry a 3-pack of what feels like a rubber eraser marked fine medium coarse. I use only the fine. Just rub the surface and SS brown stains are gone.

Re: Shore power

I suggest your go to Harbor Freight or Home Depot & get a 12 or preferably 10 ga extension cord. With a cord rated for the max breaker you are risk free. The worst that can happen is shore breaker...

Re: Peeling a Hull

I did a similar job on our 84 Camper Nicholson, not as deep a dive but the entire bottom.

Re: Fram C1191A Filter Info Needed
