Re: Isotherm rebuild vs Engle drop in

A water cooled unit is more efficient if considering a permanent unit as opposed to an Engel. The Frigoboat is water cooled and no additional pump is necessary because of the design.

Re: Gel batteries, signs of imminent death?

As far as I know it is not resistance that is needed, but voltage. If the charger sees zero voltage it remains inactive. By paralleling another battery you are providing that needed voltage.

I...

Re: Gel batteries, signs of imminent death?

This is not because of battery type but due to the charger. Many chargers will not charge a totally dead battery, some will.

Re: Electric Pressure Cooker vs LPG Set-up

Not tolerable, but possible. With a single battery - say a group 31 - the draw of the inverter will drop the voltage quickly to a point where the inverter shuts down. I see this often. The 400 AH...

Re: North Carolina Boater's Be Aware

Glad I am in Canada where boats are not taxed in any way except for sales tax at purchase. Federally registered boats (comparable to US Documentation) can re-new free and Provincially licensed boats...

Re: Windlass. Powered through engine or service batteries?

This is true if the battery banks are the same size. House banks are made up most often of multiple batteries - the total of these batteries has many more cranking amps than a single start battery.

Re: Windlass. Powered through engine or service batteries?

In my opinion the only item powered by the start battery should be the engine. Windlass and everything else should be powered from the house bank. In my case all my charge sources go to the house...

Re: Windlass. Powered through engine or service batteries?

If you have to raise anchor quickly in a lee shore situation best to have the option of raising without the engine running. There is a chance the engine would not start. Good practice is to run the...

Re: Amp Hrs used steadily increasing despite solar panel.

The shunt for the monitor has to be the first connection after the negative post. There should not be any other connection to the negative post. If there is it will not get counted.

Re: Amp Hrs used steadily increasing despite solar panel.

Combiners do not operate on current, but voltage. If your HB was down very far it would take a while for the voltage to rise enough for the combiner to close. This is especially true with the low...

We have sold both Acco and Titan chain. The Acco is US made and had not only bad galvanizing but inconsistent welds. We still have some.

The Titan chain is made in China by Canada Metal in their...

Re: New to the Forum - Battery Question

4-D and 8-D batteries are rarely true deep cycle batteries. For that matter group 31 batteries are also rarely true deep cycle. Golf Cart 6 volts are and will survive twice as many cycles as...

Re: Does this look like something to avoid!

It is not a seachest. Hunter doesn't use seachests. The inlets/outlets are beside the keel in the hull bottom.

This is a seachest, more commonly found on steel and aluminum boats.

Re: Does this look like something to avoid!

It is definitely not a seachest. The bottom seacock on the right - the one with the bronze elbow and filter - is labeled "engine pickup". The middle one on the right is labeled "waste discharge".

Re: Duplex fuses in circuits?

Yes, although I have not tried it I think one breaker may keep the other from tripping.

Re: Duplex fuses in circuits?

I wouldn't install fuses in the negative on any boat. But if you are using a panel with breakers that are also switches and have a metal boat proper double pole breakers make sense. This way when a...

Re: Duplex fuses in circuits?

The double pole breakers are not 2 separate breakers side by side, but a unique double breaker in design. If one side is turned off the other will also turn off even without the connecting piece.
