Re: Should there be mandatory liability insurance for boats?

Iím in favor of mandatory liability insurance. You have a responsibility to not harm others. Hundreds of boats, mostly sailboats, sank or went ashore and were abandoned during hurricane Irma. The tax...

Re: Varnishing exterior wood in Florida and Caribbean

A fellow came into the store and asked my Dad what the best varnish was. My dad handed him a can of Salmon Buff Interlux paint.

I wouldnít deliberately use varnish as a paint primer. It might...

Re: Varnishing exterior wood in Florida and Caribbean

I sold marine paint and varnish in Miami for about 40 years. No varnish will last five years in the South Florida sun. It would need a light sanding and a new coat about every 6 to 8 months. It...

Re: Porpoising dinghy

Iíve cured porpoising on two boats with trim tabs. On one boat I installed powered tabs and on the other fixed tabs. I think it was a matter of getting more lift aft to compensate for heavy engines. ...

Re: Best self contained tool kit

Iíve made the switch to ratching box end wrenches. I rarely need to use socket wrenchís now. There are three styles.

The cheapest are flat wrenches that you just flip over to change ratchet...

Re: Epoxy??

I have built several small plywood boats. You need to use epoxy to adhere the glass to the wood. If you use polyester it will eventually peal off in big sheets. Donít want to say how I know this.

Re: Looking For US Made United States Flags

We shipped to Oz all the time when I owned it. A flag should be easy. Just mail it in a padded envelope.

Contact victor@hopkins-carter.com and tell him what you want.

Re: Water pump cycling but there is no leak

As has been stated there are valves in the pump that have gone bad.
The pump will run until pressure builds in the line and the pressure switch turns it off. Then the water leaks back through the...

Re: Sea Sickness Solution - Anyone Tested?

Yes, the Epley was one of the things that the physical therapists did to me. They say they got the rocks to go back where they belong but I have some residual balance problems. Itís not too bad. Just...

Re: Plastic pollution in our seas

One of our local waterfront restaurants has started an organization to get restaurants to stop using styrofoam to go packages. They are also switching to biodegradable soda straws. Itís a start.

Re: Sea Sickness Solution - Anyone Tested?

I wonder if it would help my balance? About a year ago the rocks in my head shifted and despite much physical therapy I still have balance problems.
I can now walk heal to toe with my eyes open, but...

Re: Can You Identity This Creature?

I thought about using a weak pin to hold the door on the strainer closed. That way a hard punch from inside, with a dowel would break the pin and open the door. I never tried it.

Re: Can You Identity This Creature?

Jellyfish aquariums are a thing now. A hospital near my home has a huge one with about a dozen or more jellies about 6 to 8 inches each. They are weirdly calming to watch.

Re: Let's revisit through hull installations

You may be right about the chrome but I think the primary reason to use brass is that it is much easier to machine to a tight tolerance and a smooth surface. As you pointed out, the chrome prevents...

Re: I want a new Dinghy...Please help!

Both Lowe and Alumacraft make boats that have everything you want except a center console. Tiller steering isn’t all that bad. If it that important, you could probably install a side console pretty...

Re: Thru-hull replacement

Your thru-hull fittings appear to be made of DZR Brass. This is a commonly used metal for thru-hulls in Europe. It can have up to about 35% zinc in it. Tin or arsenic is added to reduce...

Re: Glueing stainless steel tubing??

Wow, all you guys who are afraid of 5200 because it’s The Devils Glue, won’t recommend it in this application because it won’t hold!
