Re: Painting under pads and keel blocks

My apologies, let's say this is addressed to anyone who is contemplating it. Leave moving the supports to the yard's professionals.

Re: Good small boat dog

A Schipperke...the original boat dog. Originally a Belgium barge dog. They are good guard dogs and are bred to kill rats. Not yappy like some small breeds and are not too big or too small.

Re: How Come You Don't See More Outrigger Sailboats ?

Because on one tack the outrigger is to leeward and that is fine. On the other tack the outrigger is to weather which makes the boat more prone to capsize since their relatively light weight does...

Re: Painting under pads and keel blocks

Never ever do this. This is in the agreement that you signed. Boatyards specifically prohibit this and many will kick you out if they catch you. This is for your safety, others safety and for the...

Re: Do all toilets require holding tanks.

I would get one to make sure you are in compliance with all the different, sometimes complex, laws regardless of where you go. Do you want to have to worry about it? I would take the peace of mind...

Re: Considering these ideas of navigation.. What is your opnion on it?

Correction: I got timed out.

BTW, to correct a little inaccuracy from an earlier post, your correction of Polaris, declination, will depend on the time of night and the date. Being wrong could...

Re: Considering these ideas of navigation.. What is your opnion on it?

Back in the old days, three mechanical chronometers were kept on the bridge. Before getting underway, the daily gain or loss of each clock was recorded. When needing to do their first celestial...

Re: Charging batteries by idling engine

Most alternators are capable of their maximum charge by running the engine a little above idle. If you don't have an ammeter on the output then look at the voltage. That will give you some idea of...

Re: Black spots all over boat in marina; do I have any recourse? How to clean?

My first guess is mildew. SoftScrub with bleach and a little elbow grease with a soft deck brush will remove it...and SoftScrub will not damage the gel coat. Coarse deck brushes do put micro...

Re: Replace inboard engine with two outboards?

I'm sure you meant to say that gas vapors are heavier than air. :)

Re: Whats it like in an upturned catamaran ?

Wondering how an inverted hull would eventually have enough oxygen if it needs to be airtight to avoid sinking. I don't understand how one could live in there for days.

Clever idea with the ladder and the person sitting on the end of it.

Re: USCG master - worth having? benefits?

Jammer, only sea time accumulated over the past 5 years counts. The larger the tonnage and distance offshore, the more hoops the Coast Guard makes you jump through.

Re: Potential Buyer Asking for a "Test Drive"

An hour of time underway is enough to get a sense of the boat. I would just do it with no contingencies.

Re: Rule 5 -- Is Single-Handing Illegal?

Probably true. Most people who go to sea for fun are trying to get away from all the rules and laws that made living on land less fun. Most probably don't give a rip about Rule 5 and in a certain...

Re: Rule 5 -- Is Single-Handing Illegal?

Good point Sailorchic.

Someone might argue that not all laws need to be enforced when it makes no sense to charge the violator.

In a different scenario, if a watch officer on a ship went below...

Re: Help us before my husband throws our Mercury outboard in the water!

Re: Actual Engine Room Temperature

Cummins Marine requires that the engine room air not rise above the ambient outside air temperature by a specific amount. I do not remember the exact amount but it was not a whole lot. I am going to...

Re: Sailing yacht - what RPM to run engine at?

The big dilemma with Diesels (unlike gasoline) is that they really will last longer if run towards their upper RPM range. The worse thing you can do to a Diesel is to allow it to idle for long...

Re: Is Singlehanding >24 Hrs. Morally Wrong?

In a nutshell, not having a proper watch is illegal under the COLREGS, but I would not call that immoral. I would just call it more risky. But then, going to sea is also risky. One always tries to...

Re: Actual Engine Room Temperature

You said you want hard data but no opinions. Your hard data will be different from others hard data anyway since all boats are different. So only wanting hard data may be limiting your responses.
