As a busy 13 year assistance tower this is definitely the most important piece of advice so far.

Even pulling with a high horsepower towboat with prop wash over the rudder, a sail boat yanking...

Having been close to the source (23 years in the USCG) and 6 years teaching licensing and dealing with the licensing arm of the USCG...they have made the threat many times unoficially.

Bottom line...not really...

The passage from Chincoteague to OC, MD last I knew was still usable for boats with less than 4 foot draft but like the NJ ICW...I would only do it on the coupe...

The ocean off the Delmarva has little current where the Chesapeake does have current and can stack up the waves pretty bad in...

passing is a challenge because every pass can be different depending on the boats, the space available, is a turn coming up, etc..etc..


the only good pass is one that is agreed upon by both...

Not really...some of us took physics and have been applying it real world for decades.

Nothing wrong with having a tiller...

Just the same as it is not wrong to have wheels teeming even power...

Usually more complex systems show up in vessels, vehicles, etc because of needs, wants and desires.

If one can live with the simplicity of a well engineered tiller, and its limitations, great.

Why?...sounds like a lot of other government programs to me.

I agree better handled by charities...but still may need government assistance at both levels.

There are lots of jobs and lots of lower license captains.


From my experience...only about 1 in 50 have the experience and the competency to actually land most decent jobs.

If your boat is straight 50A then a 50 to 30 to plug in is all that is necessary.
