Re: Prop zinc missing!

Yes, that might be an issue. Did it in the water with a pair of vise grips. (Allen wrench wouldn't fit in the aperture.)
Corrosion seems a bit unlikely, considering we weren't inport very long, and...

Prop zinc missing!

Underway for a month. Replaced the prop zinc before leaving. Dove on the hull at the other end to find the prop zinc gone. Don't remember a big thunk of it getting thrown. It was a CMP "D", and the...

Re: Ancient navigation

Nice clear night, looking at stars. Who couldn't find their way! Frank Worsley got only two star LOPs, not fixes, between Elephant Island and South Georgia, otherwise DRing Shackleton's boat to...

Re: St. Thomas to BVIs

If you don't want to bother clearing the boat, take them over on the ferry.
Why can't they fly out of Beef Island on Tortola? Like Lindbergh Bay, there is a nice little anchorage within walking...

Clockwise around the Gulf

We're a couple of schooner bums dragging the kids along on our adventure. Had enough of this muddy, shallow water. Nearing the Keys.
We're hoping to find more sailing kids so ours don't feel like an...

Re: The Knife Thread

A knife is a tool, like any other. The one that works for you is the one you are most comfortable with. Put one in your pocket, take it to the stone on occasion, and keep it oiled. If you need a...

Re: Hello World from a family of dreamers

Okay. I haven't been everywhere, and usually tether the cell with a local sim card or take the computer ashore. Have you checked out "activecaptain.com"? They have marina specific information like...

Re: Hello World from a family of dreamers

As with "chuckr" and others, a big fan of SSB. However, opted for sat phone during offshore for ease of use. I use SSB at work. My wife and kids would look at it and cock their heads and say, "What...

Re: Hello World from a family of dreamers

You should definitely take a cheapy little wifi repeater. Even in marinas that "have wifi", you won't have a good signal, if any, in the slip. A few people we've met who have solved this stick the...

Re: LED Running lights advice

"Undue glare" should also dictate position of lights, not just intensity.

Re: LED Running lights advice

While not "breaking the rules", many lights are advertised as meeting the minimum. THAT is what I would ignore. Boats in general, and sailboats in particular, are hard enough to see from the bridge...

Re: LED Running lights advice

Screw the rules! Brighter is better. LEDs use minimal amperage compared to their incandescent cousins. Their are several companies that make the full assembly or just replacement bulbs.
Also keep in...

Re: Gulf of Mexico: Haul Out & Dry Storage for big monohull

If you're in Texas, have you looked into the tug yards up by Brady's Landing in Houston? Not your usual yacht spot, but I've seen sailboats up there. You'd have to deal with tugs and tankers, maybe...

Re: Advice on Buying Steel

Neil Young IS a sailor. His boat, W N Ragland, was up for sale resently. It is wood.
Keep an eye out on newer builds for steel hulls with an aluminum house (or various other mix and match metals)....

Re: Hello World from a family of dreamers

We're heading south at a slow bell. There are three Minecraft fanatics onboard who will give you a run for your money. We're just making Tampa and don't have any concrete plans so can't nail down...

Re: Hello World from a family of dreamers

It has been in the forums before. Not sure where the thread is now. Had to do a lot of my own foot work, but love our system. And can't beat the addition of AIS. It has top priority in electronics,...

Re: Hello World from a family of dreamers

As far as hurricanes, the bottom of the Caribbean rarely sees them, giving you an excuse to visit Grenada, Dominica, Aruba, Curacao, Costa Rica. This doesn't forgive you for not paying attention to...

Re: Hello World from a family of dreamers

If you like open source, and Linux, check out OpenCPN as a piece of nav software. I'm using it with GPS and AIS on a dual boot Dell. All US electronic charts are free from NOAA.
