Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Noelex,

That ain't nothin'.

Two weeks ago, I pulled up our anchor and noticed that it had some weed on it so I lowered it to maybe two feet below the water surface to allow my slow motoring to...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

A forty foot skid mark leading up to the final big dig. A difficult anchorage because looks can be deceiving. Powered back slowly up to full throttle at 12:1 scope. 45kg Ultra.

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

I just tried out my new Olympus tg4 underwater camera. Disappointed so far with the results compared to the Gopro. How are you editing your pictures? These were taken in the underwater mode. With...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Looks like the easiest possible bottom to set an anchor, soft sand. I wish all locations were as easy.

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

There was a 27ft sailboat left in the anchorage unattended for a week while the Couple went ashore to travel. It weathered several blasts of 30-35 knot winds, multiple wind changes without issue...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Ann,

The shiny and heavily galvanized anchors are on the bows of boats that stay in the marinas. He's showing pictures of well-used anchors which spend most of their time underwater and...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Here's a slightly different angle. When I originally set the anchor three days ago, I powered back in reverse at full throttle twice. 25 ton, full throttle reverse 100hp, 10:1 scope, 3.5 meter...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Sometimes, this is as good as it gets. Set in this manner, our 45kg Ultra has held for three days during steady winds of 20 knots gusting to 25 knots occasionally. I did let out 17:1 scope at one...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Jim and Monte,

Get yourself a red filter for your Gopro, which will take out the green tones and color correct. Just make sure you get the right one for the housing you use. There are two...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Here's another view of the Ultra in the same position. Didn't get a picture of the 50 meter long furrow leading up to the big dig.

Many if not most boats experience dragging in this anchorage...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

After several 180 degree wind shifts over the past two days, I decided with higher winds forecast over the weekend, a look at the Ultra 45kg was in order. What I found surprised me, at some point...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

For the first season on our present boat when we successfully used a Lewmar 75 pound CQR, we utilized a completely different setting technique than the anchors shown, and from the way we do things...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

We can get our Ultra to dig in deep, but I think it's due to anchoring here multiple times, knowing the bottom... and practice. Diving on ones anchor on a regular basis is an eye opening experience....

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Hey Mr. Spock,

Is that Vulcan seabed similar to where I'm at here on Sardinia? Hard sand with a heavy underlying root bed. Lots of dragging going on around here when the wind increases. Many if...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Your answer is in my previous posts made a few hours ago, when I used two different anchors on the same boat, same length of chain, same bottom, same technique.

Same everything using a CQR vs an...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

I felt a little foolish after going over their boat to show them how it's done properly, then only being able to dig a 90 ft 4 inch deep trench with the tip of their anchor.

I'd used the Same 75...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Here's another look at the CQR that I was very confident that I could set in the hard sand bottom.

Again.... Same boat, same depth, same amount of 12mm chain, same guy setting the anchor.......

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Here's our Ultra 45kg set in the same bottom 100ft away. I'd never realized how bad the Lewmar CQR we used three years ago was... until today.

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Here's an education moment. Pictured is an authentic CQR on an identical Oyster 53 anchored 200 feet away from us on a hard sand bottom. It should be easy to set this anchor, but this is how it...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Sorry, not much to see when our Ultra anchor 45kg gets treated to a sandy bottom. 7 meter depth, 40 meters of chain, wife used 2200 rpms of reverse. The set was instant viewed from above during the...
