Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

Good Video Salty…
It shows the working boats in detail and what they normally start out with.
(Looks like fiberglass and the commercial Yamaha long boat design)

Also shows Floats/bait lines and...

I also hope he is put on Suicide Watch with the onslaught of media attention and sensational reporting that will inevitably happen.

The guy is probably in a very fragile state and I suspect that...

Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

Good point but I would have thought that they would have an assortment of smaller hand line to catch the bait and some food fish

Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

Agreed, I cannot think of any other less travelled yet more benign stretch of Ocean that would allow a man in an open boat to survive undetected for such a long time.

Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

Totally agree Mausgras.
One of the reasons I love living in the more undeveloped communities of subsistence farmers and fishermen is their resilience in the face of adversity.
I see it all the time...

Salty...I think you just answered many questions. Have spent a lot of time in Micronesian Atols and studied there culture. That is exactly how they would have viewed it. Possession has a loose...

Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

You are assuming they are the same boxes, instead of similar sized boxes for manual transport.

Logic dictates that the onboard fish boxes need to be very secure and I have seen the molded box...

Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

I think the Blue fish box is molded into the hull and is structurally integral.

In SE Asia you come accros fishing nomads who survive on what they catch.
It is all about having that survival...

Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

I am hoping all this will come out in a book.

Guessing that they lost most of their gear in the early storm he reported.

Later on.. swollen fingers and delirium might have lost him the knife...

Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

Thanks again Cote Mar for summarising the reported updates.

Everything I read confirms an amazing survival story
... Mr Lanwi said the boat appeared to be old and "was in bad shape".

"It looks...

Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

So much to learn about survival from this...

Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

Consder this:
The guy fishes for a living and has lots of gear onboard
At sea he can only eat his catch..no one to sell to
Offshore and drifting his boat becomes a magnet for many fish.
Fish have...

Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

Good start and still plausible to me.

They were out there in the season of Gap Winds so could easily get blown offshore plus surviving is all about attitude.

Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

Totally agree. There are more Sharks that need culling in this Forum than in W. Australia :)
If this was not a fisherman but instead a surviving cruiser, would you be so quick to imply cannibalism?...

Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

All of this seems plausible to me.
He would remember Dec 25th departure.
Tough small boat offshore fisherman know how to survive on anything
