Part of the above is certainly not correct. The red British ensign is incorrect for an American boat to fly at all, it is supposed to be the national flag color, not that of the ensign for their...

We always fly courtesy flags. I make mine from spinnaker cloth off-cuts, often free from sailmakers, as the scraps I use are too small for them to do anything useful with.
