If there wasn't already a hole I am sure the galvanizers would have drilled one. They are very wary about voids and that is the only way of checking.

The trouble with welds is that they can look good but not be strong due to lack of penetration.
The weld would have to be ultra sonically tested to ensure it is good. All downto the manufactures...

That is an interesting idea - do you have any trouble with the line getting tangled in the chain/anchor when set? Is it a problem when retrieving, I assume you use a windlass?

Love this thread and the pictures are great!.

I use the first method of setting my anchor but when going astern I like to
hold the chain / rode to feel when or if it has set.
