Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Mike, I don't think they do work well. I have been in a few anchorages with larger ships and they have dragged in only moderate conditions. Of course they have plenty of crew to constantly monitor...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Thanks for the kind words Zven.

Sorry about the photos. I would like to make the photos available to everyone, but the hosting site Photobucket announced yesterday they have blocked third party...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Anchor threads seem to breed conspiracy theories :).

I think people are refering to Post #61 on the following thread:

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

It may have been my photo of a bent Manson Supreme photographed around 2008. I never found the cause.

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Thanks Estarzinger

I think it is good to share photos of bent anchors. They are not common, but by sharing the images we can have a better idea if a particular model has a problem.

Personally,...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

This is an Ultra anchor cut in half showing the inside of the shank. You can see the convex external profile and the internal reinforcement that I think was not present on the early models.

The Vulcan is quite new. For those that have not seen the complex shank profile, this photo should help:

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Titanium would produce the ultimate anchor shank. As Dockhead suggests, I understand the cost of titanium has fallen considerably. The lighter weight and thinner profile would, I think, produce a...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Interesting discussion on shanks with some very insightful replies.

In my view, the award for the world's best anchor shank is a tie between the steel Spade and the Ultra. The fabricated...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

If you look back in this thread you will see lots of photos of my bent Mantus shank.

This was the original mild steel shank. Mantus have changed the specifications to a stronger high test steel...

Thanks Cfarrar. That is a nicely buried Rocna and just the thing to get the thread back on track :thumb:.

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Thanks Keiron.

I have appreciated your photos of the Vulcan very much too. Anchor photos (as well as Panope's great videos) I think are a useful means of anchor evaluation. The information is...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

I have put a lot of effort into maintaining independence.

I have paid for all my anchors. I have never received even a free beer from an anchor manufacturer. With camera gear etc this is not a...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Thanks everyone for the kind offers.

I know most cruisers are on a pretty tight budget and I would not feel right about accepting money from them. However, the sentiment is very much appreciated.

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Thanks Ann

For the record, Mantus initially sent me an anchor at no charge. They have never asked for payment, but to remove any suggestion of bias or favouritism and because I wanted to continue...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

After a bit more research, I think the anchor in question is an FOB anchor, specifically an FOB THP. Of course, this is still a variation on the Danforth design and as such it will share a lot of...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

With a significant change of direction of pull, anchors can respond in several ways. In decreasing order of desirability they can:

1. Shuffle. The means the anchor remains buried with both of the...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Every time I see an anchor I...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

The Kobra is a good anchor and great value for money, especially when you consider it is made by a reputable company and therefore the quality control should be good.

However, in my view, the...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

I have only seen the Jambo anchor a few times. It is a beatifully made anchor, particularly in stainless steel, and seems to have developed a reasonable following mainly on German flagged boats. This...

It does not show an anchor, rather just the chain disappearing into the...
