I spent a couple of happy weeks in that area this summer as well. Simple stuff if you bother to work out the tides.

Dont try sailing around the Cherbourg peninsular or through the Pentland Firth where tides can be expected to be at least 7 kts, and in certain areas can reach 11 kts.

SOG is usefull, but so is...
