The explanation also needs to account for the dynamic balance of the hull in the horizontal plane as it will weathercock when heeled hard over, the bulk of the drag...

Here is quite a good video of a tornado/waterspout 90 deg knockdown to a Clipper yacht. Shows how quickly things go awry. The knockdown took just a few seconds.

I questioned earlier if cats could flip whilst under bare poles and some people said they heard of it happening. I found a few examples on the web, with one especially good account of such an event...

Just wondering: this sounds to me like the capsize was caused by a tornado/waterspout. That would pose a danger no matter what you do given 100kt + wind speeds.

What are the wind stability limits...

I think with a sudden increase in wind the static load is more relevant and so force rather than power is the measure to look at that would be a square relationship. Still a huge increase though for...

It's so similar to the Gunboat 55 incident where that cat was dismasted only a few hundred miles further north last year, also in a tornado/waterspout type of event. This is the area of the Bermuda...
