Re: Nauticat 52 Refit

That sailing dinghy of yours always puts a smile on my face. Looks like it has a similar effect on your kids. Thanks for posting the pics. Dan

Indeed, thanks for putting school back in session, and for the entertaining crew shots!

Re: Nauticat 52 Refit

This could very well be the long-term answer for my own boat as well. You've pretty much sold me on maintaining my old gelcoat, which actually still looks pretty good after 28 years! I've even...

Re: Nauticat 52 Refit

Is the Awlgrip for the nonskid because gel is too much of a PITA to apply with nonskid material, e.g. Griptex or molds, and the nonskid will more easily hide any subsequent damage? Likewise, is the...

Re: Nauticat 52 Refit

Minaret -- I must have missed something (again!), but are you using gelcoat and Awlgrip for your new deck? That is, Awlgrip for the nonskid areas and gel for the rest? Sorry if I lost track of the...

Re: Nauticat 52 Refit

Wow, great news! Congrats, Minaret.:flowers: You not only got your own boat completely refurbished, but just think how many other boat owners you helped out along the way.:thumb: Looking forward to...

Re: Nauticat 52 Refit

I guess that makes sense since there's far less prep work. It's funny, all the pros I've talked to seem to hate gelcoat and want to use Awlgrip. I'm actually pretty relieved that I can work with...

Re: Nauticat 52 Refit

To hire a pro to do this (too bad you're not on the e. coast!), do you think the costs would be significantly higher than doing the same in Awlgrip?

Re: Nauticat 52 Refit

When you mention Griptex, am I correct to assume you're talking about mixing it in with Awlgrip paint? I didn't think using Gelcoat for this process was viable but maybe I'm wrong.

Re: Nauticat 52 Refit

I had (incorrectly) assumed that PS had solid hulls with no coring. We're looking at balsa or ply coring here, right?

Re: Nauticat 52 Refit

Real valuable guidance here, Minaret, thanks. I've got it bookmarked! I take it that, for larger areas, the sprayer is preferred over brushing primarily because it saves on sanding time? Or is...

Re: Nauticat 52 Refit

I also thought about the very top of the mast for camera placement to be out of the way of any headsails but that may or may not be realistic. In your case with 79', would that still be within range...

Re: Nauticat 52 Refit

I've been thinking about doing something like this since I bought my boat! My idea was a camera(s) up high on the mast to serve as an add'l "lookout" when I was short or single-handed. A 360 deg....

Re: Nauticat 52 Refit

If that was a piece of commercially manufactured G10 for sale it would be exorbitantly costly!

Re: Nauticat 52 Refit

Yeah, but once the helmet is off, the info may still have trouble penetrating my rather thick skull!

In actual fact, much has penetrated & much has been learned. Once I put some of these...

Re: Nauticat 52 Refit

Thanks Minaret! I'm out in the southern Rockies and it still can't decide if it wants to be spring or still winter. Probably similar out in Seattle, only different!

Looking forward to getting...

Re: Nauticat 52 Refit

I'll second the request. I've had some leakage out the top of one of my diesel tanks when they are full. Tks. in advance, Minaret.

No, I've been with you from the start & (now!) remember the foam part. I don't think I understood what was going on at the time. In fact, I'm not sure there's enough bandwith out there to handle my...

Re: Nauticat 52 Refit

Why all the additional layup to the decks? Were they compromised from removing all the teak? I assume they're cored. Just making them beefier?
