Speedcat
Check us out - launched in 1974 - lived aboard 15 years, around the world, then sat on the land for another 15 while we built our house, now another 20 years going around Australia....

Re: Ferro Cement Hulls ?

Hello Bill we are coming in to NSW after a 7 day ocen voyage from Tasmania so I have been offline so to speak, and enjoying the wild blue yonder. We did the trip a 100 miles off the ocast to miss the...

Re: Ferro Cement Hulls ?

I'd be wondering about where it thins out to fair in. Will those thin edges of concrete not crumble and bits will lift from the deck. In Australia we have a product called Bondcrete, Added to a rich...

Re: Ferro Cement Hulls ?

I agree with yachts66. Decks can take a fair bit of abuse. And unless really lumpy, by the time antiskid goes on, most will not be seen.

Hope that helps,

Re: Ferro Cement Hulls ?

We have used this technique when fairing alloy boats, but I just recently discussed this technique with a luxury boat builder and he Po-pooed it saying it can form hairline cracks along the ridge...

Re: Ferro Cement Hulls ?

The closer you get to perfection, the more imperfections appear. A high gloss finish will highlight every imperfection, and make you more nervous of jetties and unguarded dinghies.

Recently we...

Re: Ferro Cement Hulls ?

Hi Bill,
Again, I'm no expert. I know this boat like the back of my hand, but no other FC.
I'll be around for a bit so if I can offer any tidbits of advice, just ask. Presently on the hard at...

Howdy howdy howdy,
I'm no expert on FC boats, but I have built one and sailed her around the world. Geez, that was a time ago. Launched her in '73. Let me see.... yeah she's nearly 40 years old!...

Re: Ferro Cement Hulls ?

You'd be very wise to clean the fuel system very well after it sitting for so many years. Change every filter, bled all lines, and expect water to have collected in the tanks from condensation,...

Re: Ferro Cement Hulls ?

Wonderful News Peter. Excellent report. The Hot blaster sounds a grand tool and I can only image its effect having used several cold high pressure units. If it finds weak spots and digs to good mesh...

Re: Ferro Cement Hulls ?

I've had a patch of oil/fuel? leaching through in engine room area for yonks. Hull pings when tapped, and sandblasting showed this area to be hard, so outside of solvent washing the area before...

Re: Ferro Cement Hulls ?

Hi John
I built and still sail a ferro boat launched in '73, repaired it a fair bit over that time. Any bleeding of rust is cancer, any raised area or bump usually round like a washer is cancer and...

Re: Ferro Cement Hulls ?

Yacht 66, ferro floating home would be perfect if constructed correctly. Make sure the mortar has full penetration into the mesh, no voids, especially a problem near the frames, use a vibratory, but...

Thomas,
Banyandah was built hanging from a center support angle iron supported on 6"x2" at every frame, which are spaced 1 metre apart. The bottom of the keel is solid concrete 6" up, reinforced...

Hello Thomas,
You have just summed up a perfect situation for ferro. The Chinese built barges as you describe last century, maybe it was the century before last, Google it and you might find an...

Right on the mark - Billy4184

Back in '73, we homebuilt Banyandah in Sydney for a very low cost, except for man hours worked, and still own her after close on 200k around the world. Bit of...

Re: repairing a hole in my ferro cement hull, pictures & details

Wolfaroo, your repair looks good mate. I replaced an entire bow section once. The boat had a wet chain locker and rotted from the inside out. Did pretty much what you did. I can't see if you...

The less metal embedded in your hull the better. Big metal can and probably will rust over the life of the hull. Case in point, Hartley used 20X6 flat bar at the deck line and flare. It's the cause...

Kind of think the crowd running Hartley have simplified the names of their designs. When Banyandah was built in '73, Hartley offered three variations of the same hull shape in a 32' (Queenslander)...
