I think your friends are using it wrong or something. A press is an upside down filter. I've been using them for years and never had grounds in my coffee.

You don't have to filter press coffee, it is a filter.

I think the egg albumen creates a static charge and makes the grounds precipitate. On the other hand it might be an old wives tale without merit :)
