Maybe this is a question of taste.
In a paper chart you see "everything". With this setting it is no longer a shoal it is just a red cross and I have to search for information what the red cross...

But if you set your safety depth to 3 m, the you have red cross. With a higher value the red crosses go away and you can see the shoal.

If navigation is the main purpose for the netbook, then a change of OS to a stripped XP is possible. Tiny XP rev 09 will work and will use a lot less resources of CPU power and RAM memory
