Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

it's also scary when you look at the shackles and swivels with splayed forks.

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

I have bent a 35 kg Bugel shank. It was not made of stainless steel.
If it had been, I am sure it would have bent as well.

The Bugel 35 kg has a long shank and it is 20mm thick. 20mm is not...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Ok, you are right that it's not good when anchors bend, my point was that many of them do when they have thin shanks. In order that we do not create to much thread drift we should leave it at that....

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

My understanding is that the stainless ones are germanischer lloyd certified and are part of the Wasi ground tackle system.

My two Bugels both have beveled edges and look very professionally made,...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

I have no experience with stainless Bugels, however they should be stronger than steel ones. My steel Bugel is extremely strong in vertical pull and I don't think it is possible to bend it this way....

Photos of Anchors Setting.

Many anchors will bend when the pull becomes perpendicular to the shank. True it's a bit of a design fault that could be rectified by doubling the thickness. Mine is 22mm and has bent twice. The old...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Hi Kenomac,

Thats a very good post which makes a very good contribution.

What scope do you have?

Is it possible to pull again at 2800rpm (I think thats about 70% power) and take photos.

Photos of Anchors Setting.

Great idea that you take some photos in med weed.

My experience is that it makes no difference and sets fine. For me, retrieving the anchor after a weed set is even harder as it does not want to...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Weed has no bad effect on my anchor and I have never spent time removing weed that stopped the anchor setting. I stick my anchor down anywhere and expect it to hold every time.

Imagine anchoring...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Ok, but it didn't so it clearly was not pulled back hard enough.

Unless you pull back with at least 75% power and see the bow dip under the strain, then you have not fully set the anchor.

Its...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Hmmm... well if he used my technique, he would have detected it!

Slow and careful is for sailors who don't want to risk pulling the anchor out on a sunny no wind afternoon.

This was a very...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Well , we should judge it harshly as its clearly not an anchor I would want on my boat, especially when another type digs in not 40m away.

You should tell him to have a go in the same place as...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Just so I'm clear on this,
we are talking the same location as the picture of the spade above are we.

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Thats what I would imagine, reversed too quickly with not enough chain out.

I can't imagine it being that inadequate that with the right scope it behaved like that before it set. If mine did, I...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

First assuming that in this sand is is possible to dig in as the first photo shows....

I have a bugel and it never set like that.
I would guess that it was pulled on a short scope so the tip...
