Re: Twin Engines/Twin Rudders on a Mono?

Interesting, but can you buy such a thruster?

Re: Twin Engines/Twin Rudders on a Mono?

A monomaran!

Love the anchor arm.

Note that it's CE Class "B" - unusual for a boat that size not to make "A"

Re: Twin Engines/Twin Rudders on a Mono?

I don't know. I want a Hundested variable pitch prop, which unlike my Autoprop, is pitched manually. It looks hell for strong to me, but I don't know whether it's as strong as it looks. The...

Re: Twin Engines/Twin Rudders on a Mono?

Aren't both of those more complex, than the rather straightforward retracting drive? And more draggy? The retractable drive even has a simple fixed prop.

Re: Twin Engines/Twin Rudders on a Mono?

Thanks, TJ, that's really useful.

A good sailing boat already has redundant propulsion -- the sails. The problem is that in polar regions you may have dead calms for a month at a time. That was...

Re: Twin Engines/Twin Rudders on a Mono?

This post is jam-packed with wisdom, and I hope others will read it and gain from it also. Thanks for taking the time to write this.

In my opinion, everything in here is absolutely right. I've...

Re: Twin Engines/Twin Rudders on a Mono?

I always pay a great deal of attention to what you write, particularly on subjects like this -- you have actually, practically done a lot of the stuff I'm planning to do over the next 10 years, and...

Re: Twin Engines/Twin Rudders on a Mono?

I think between this very convincing argument, and what Evans has written, and some of the other extremely interesting comments, I have finished thinking about twin engines and shafts and have...

Re: Twin Engines/Twin Rudders on a Mono?

Circular file?? Extremely interesting and extremely valuable commentary. Please don't be shy, in the future!

Re: Twin Engines/Twin Rudders on a Mono?

Ticks a lot of my boxes. The people who ordered her obviously had very similar priorities to mine.

There's no accommodation plan (unbelievable that someone would be trying to sell a $2 million...

That's an interesting boat, actually.

Re: Twin Engines/Twin Rudders on a Mono?

It's a good point. And I don't think you can justify a second motor just to improve fuel efficiency by running a single at a better load -- for the reason you showed. But it is pleasant to be able...

Re: Twin Engines/Twin Rudders on a Mono?

Well, it's a fair question, but most of the answers are in the original post.

Twin engines does not increase the number of engines. I have two engines already now. The only difference in this is...

Re: Twin Engines/Twin Rudders on a Mono?

That could add back a lot of efficiency. Does anyone know?

Really? Hydraulic systems seem pretty simple and cheap to me -- farm tech. I guess it's all relative.

Re: Twin Engines/Twin Rudders on a Mono?

I think I might be willing to take the plunge with hydraulics. They are so ubiquitous and so well developed, the parts are so generic, and the systems are so easy to get repaired in case of need. ...

Re: Twin Engines/Twin Rudders on a Mono?

Definitely, if you're going to run the generator from an engine which is used for anything else, you need to be able to disconnect it.

There are different ways to do that. With a belt drive,...

Re: Twin Engines/Twin Rudders on a Mono?

Thanks; this is very interesting.

You have inspired me with the thought that I should be studying trawler practice -- that's a hot tip which had not occurred to me.

I will start looking at...

Re: Twin Engines/Twin Rudders on a Mono?

Yes, I think about lifting keels.

And I think about twin keels also.

This is getting into the territory where the NA is already needed -- it's getting over my head technically.

I like all...

Re: Twin Engines/Twin Rudders on a Mono?

Well, the role of the boat is well defined in the other thread -- in two words, high latitude, long distance adventure cruiser, which is supposed to have very, very good sailing performance but is...

Re: Twin Engines/Twin Rudders on a Mono?

Continuing the thought --

I have two diesel engines on my present boat. A 100 horsepower Yanmar weighing about 250kg with the marine gear, and a 6.5kW Kohler generator weighing about the same.

Twin Engines/Twin Rudders on a Mono?

What do we think of this?

Some of the gorgeous and obscenely expensive Laurent Giles designed Moodys of the '50's and '60's had twin engines.

I have always envied cat drivers for their...
