Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna
When the conditions are good and the antennas are new, a $50 whip will work just as good as a $400 high end antenna. This all changes over the years of exposure to UV and humid, salty air where... |

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna
But that Shakespeare would not be a Phase III nor even a Galaxy line antenna, right? Morad is right there at quality level with the high end lines. |

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna
Here’s a picture of our installation of a Galaxy Little Giant (in black) on our main mast head. The white coax is the long cable going down the mast to the radio and the black thin coax is just 12”... |

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna
The Galaxy Little Giant is a very good antenna… I’ve been using it for the past 15 years. It has one weak point, namely that it has a cable attached permanently. The workaround is to make it short... |

I recommend you reconsider your pick and look at the CELmar0-1 antenna. PDF: https://acantennas.com/sites/default/files/productsheets/CELmar0-1.pdf |

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna
You will lose most of the range but you need vertical clearance with radar scanner... it is in the radar manual but IIRC one meter minimum (40”). I would put the antenna on the upper spreader and... |

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna
John, you are repeating this info about gain and radiation pattern but nobody is claiming otherwise. I stated that I *can't* compare range, not that the 5400 has more range. I did measure the... |

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna
Hi John, The 5400 is a dipole antenna. I think I have the 5215 on my mizzen mast and it grounds the shield to the metal mount, creating grounding loops with the bonding system. I also get a higher... |

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna
Your installer is exactly right and you should take his advice and get that cable and that antenna. Make sure the cable is from Times Microwave and you get the ultra flex variant of it. Sent... |

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna
What helps is to have antennas, wind sensors etc. blocking the 3-color light at exactly where one color of the light changes to another. |

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna
The shakespear little giant is.... Here it comes... Little. The big ones are 8-12dB for motoryachts. It is a dipole so less noise than base loaded designs which are ground plane antennas. |

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna
The Shakespeare Little Giant is 1/2 wave, not 5/8. It is a center fed dipole unlike the average grounded designs, which keeps the receiver S/N nice and clean. Every user notices the big... |

Lol. That self amalgamating tape, what is it made of? I.e. does it become a sticky mass or is it silicone? |

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna
Because I think tar would work better than a box. The box would be long, narrow and flat... with two cable glands, one at each end, that you somehow need to get N-type connectors through. I envision... |

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna

Did you check the flexible LMR400? It was proven to be good for marine use... Let me find it again and post it here. Here is APRS weather graphics from a station in Panama: this stuff is so cool... |

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna
If you want an N-connector, buy one and put it on; I mean, for masthead mount you have to cut off most of the cable and put a new connector on anyway. The silver-plated elements version is here:... |

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna
I used to have a Sailor VHF a long time ago so I just checked a manual for a current one and both have/had SO-239 connectors so it's BS that pro-radios have N connectors. There are more Sailor radios... |
