Re: Alternator Overheating Problem
I would suggest you read this and check out some of the links. All about battery equalization (https://shop.pkys.com/battery-equalization.aspx) |

Re: Alternator Overheating Problem
Equalization charge is what you need I believe although by exercising the batteries (discharge - full charge) a few times it might help if the battery isn't to far gone. Don't trust in the snake oil... |

Re: Alternator Overheating Problem
For the information of those following this thread (in case anyone is wondering) I removed my last post because it was so similar to OceanPlanet's post #39. |

Re: Alternator Overheating Problem
Its possible, if you had a shorted cell. I don't think there would be much difference otherwise. I think (iirc) that Balmar suggests you place the temp sensor on the first battery in the bank. |

Re: Alternator Overheating Problem
Well, I would only use one for the house bank. Under normal conditions your starter battery isn't going to require very much power to charge it and so it wont heat up much. |

Re: Alternator Overheating Problem
Stu, the idea isn't really to run an alternator at 50% output. The idea is to run the alternator at as near full output as possible in order to get the batteries charged, n'est-ce pas? |

Re: Alternator Overheating Problem
SV Demeter; It doesn't really say by how much it reduces the output. The manual for the 612/ARS-5 states it cuts output by ~50%. It also states that although that will protect the alternator it... |

Re: Alternator Overheating Problem
Absolutely agree. I just said that a temp. sensor is not the answer to his problem. Neither is cutting down the size of his battery bank. The temp. sensor should be used, I agree, but the problem is... |

Re: Alternator Overheating Problem
No, this is not the solution. The solution is to fix the problem so that the alternator never overheats. 100 c is to hot by at least 10 deg. But that is just a stop gap. As long as you realize that... |

Re: Alternator Overheating Problem
This pdf might help you understand why you are having problems. You are over taxing the alternators and it is probably why the original failed half way across the Atlantic. ... |

Re: Alternator overheating problem
Dropping from 50 to 30 amps in 45 minutes doesn't seem out of the ordinary to me. What is important is the charge state of the batteries. Holding your finger on the alternator for 1 sec. doesn't... |
