Re: Lightning protection for you boat
Sorry, I was speaking of my boat. In the case of a cat, gotta have submerged metal. I have seen wooden hull boats that have sheet copper applied to their hull for worm protection. Lightweight and... |

Re: Lightning protection for you boat
In-mast radio and light cables are unavoidable, and by themselves will conduct strike energy to your radio and DC systems. This is not the preferred current path. If I had a semiconducting carbon... |

Re: Lightning protection for you boat
Also remember that in-mast wires for antennas and lighting mean that it's pretty much impossible for your mast to be non-conductive. The main premise of lightning protection is not strike... |

Re: Lightning protection for you boat
Absolutely. There is no question that the lower resistance, the better. Metal hulls probably approach this ... |

Re: Lightning protection for you boat
< 10 ohms - It's not the wire that is the limiting factor; it's the amount of conductor surface area in contact with non-current saturated seawater. |

Re: Lightning protection for you boat
I wonder what the charge is for the DDCE "annual inspection" ? I suspect these devices may be no better than many other lightning protection systems, except that the very high prices subsidize... |

Re: Lightning protection for you boat
Perhaps if one can achieve the < 10 ohm "ground" connection, all forms of mast top electrodes would work pretty well ... Actually measuring this would require another nearby "ground" connection... |

Re: Lightning protection for you boat
A properly designed Faraday cage will work - but is rarely necessary. Portable devices are well protected if they have no wires connected (like charging cables, etc) and are stored in an insulated... |

Re: Lightning protection for you boat
I'm not convinced this is true - for the same mast height. The cited data is based upon insurance claims - boats that are damaged. Mono hulls typically have submerged grounding electrodes - lead... |
