Re: Viability of electric only propulsion in 2018 - is there a good option after all?

Not in countries with green attitude, that doubles the kWh price every few years...

Re: Viability of electric only propulsion in 2018 - is there a good option after all?

That's ridiculous.

Do you have an idea how many watts is nessecary to overcome windage of a 30ft boat at let's say 6kn on the bow? A tiny inefficient wind generator is able to collect this out of...

Re: Viability of electric only propulsion in 2018 - is there a good option after all?

A Perpetuum Mobile is a good idea to overcome the Enthropie theory and the losses by heat but unfortunately does not create energy out of thin air.

Efficiency can be improved by using...

Re: Viability of electric only propulsion in 2018 - is there a good option after all?

I would add an alternator to the electric motor, so you can charge your batteries while motoring same as with diesel.

With a small motor and a big balmar alternator you can even charge the house...

Re: Viability of electric only propulsion in 2018 - is there a good option after all?

There is no point to replace a seldom used diesel engine by a less useful and even less usable electric propulsion. It is just waste of money and resources.

Re: Viability of electric only propulsion in 2018 - is there a good option after all?

We use solar energy excessively on board for water making, cooling, heating, cooking, baking etc. We use what we can harvest with our 1650Wp array, there is no excess energy we could store / use for...

Re: Viability of electric only propulsion in 2018 - is there a good option after all?

Use gravity. Just find a way to stay a little off the wave and go downhill all the time.
It would work day and night - it is called surfing?

Another option - use a sea anchor and deploy it to the...

Re: Viability of electric only propulsion in 2018 - is there a good option after all?

Well, good idea, the galleeres in the roman ages used rowing slaves for propulsion. The greenees are not too far away to re-introduce those methods to reluctant modern boaters with foosile fuel...

Re: Viability of electric only propulsion in 2018 - is there a good option after all?

there are 2 prototype cats as proof of concept with huge battery banks and all decks covered with panels. But this is not the liveaboerd lifestyle you are looking for I guess, no space to lay around...

Well, this, and because electric propulsion is silent. Aturbine makes much more noise.

Re: Viability of electric only propulsion in 2018 - is there a good option after all?

All electric works since the 60es. Look at submarines, a big battery bank and a small thermo-nuclear reactor keeps them for decades crossing oceans all-electric.
