Re: Alternator does not Fully Charge the Batteries

Available AH is from 50% SOC to 100% SOC. Engine charging is not efficient after the batteries reach about 80% SOC as the last 20% takes a very long time - figure 6 to 8 hours - as the batteries'...

Re: Alternator does not Fully Charge the Batteries

Depends how much longer. If motoring 8 hours - pretty much all day - they will be close to fully charged most likely. The last 15% or so of charge will take that long and there is not much anyone can...

Re: Alternator does not Fully Charge the Batteries

Wrong. Any lead acid battery - flooded, gel, or agm - requires a long time to charge completely as the battery's resistance increases. The last 15% or so takes many hours. There is no magical way...

Re: Alternator does not Fully Charge the Batteries

AGM and flooded lead acid batteries are very close in charging voltages so it shouldn't be a problem as is. There are advantages to external regulation though, 3 stage charging, alt and battery temp...

Re: Alternator does not Fully Charge the Batteries

For finding voltage drop in DC wiring you have to use the length of the positive AND the return negative. 4 awg does give you a 3% drop as I posted, but that takes 14.4 down to 13.96 volts - really...

Re: Alternator does not Fully Charge the Batteries

I would not use a wire sized for alternator output based on 3% voltage drop. I would use the chart or calculator to find the gauge for 3% voltage drop and then increase it a size or 2. This is not a...

Re: Alternator does not Fully Charge the Batteries

That is correct, the alt has no clue where the sense wire is reading the voltage from.

I agree with Bill, lose the battery isolator, upgrade the wire to larger, and add an Echo Charge or similar.

Re: Alternator does not fully charge the batteries

I agree on a boat with more than one battery for house and one for start. The Hitachi alts on Yanmars for example lower the output voltage by enough when warm so that external reg or not they can...

Re: Alternator does not fully charge the batteries

How many marine engines - Beta, Yanmar, Volvo, etc - come with an "industrial" alternator?

The ability to downrate the alt is an important option for anyone with a decent size bank of Agm...

Re: Alternator does not fully charge the batteries

While automobiles are designed as systems the 14.4 alt is still used, whether a bare bones vehicle or a fully optioned one. As far as alt size, it really makes no difference to the battery, which is...

Re: Alternator does not fully charge the batteries

I am not justifying not buying and fitting an external regulator - as stated they have many benefits and are essential with a large bank of Agm batteries for alternator lifespan.

But I will stick...

Re: Alternator does not fully charge the batteries

I did not say that there are not advantages to an external 3 stage regulator.

Actually you missed one feature anyway - some like Balmar's MC-614 allow you to dial the alt output back to say 70%...

Re: Alternator does not fully charge the batteries

Really. Rare to see that low on a newer engine.

My point was that an external 3 stage regulator will not charge any faster than a built-in dumb reg as long as the bulk/absorption voltage is the...

Re: Alternator does not fully charge the batteries

The op has a boat with a 2004 Volvo MD2040 engine that would likely have an alternator with a charging voltage of 14.4. It has been a long time since the set voltage was commonly 13.8 volts.

The...

Re: Alternator does not fully charge the batteries

14.4 or a bit higher is normal far a standard dumb regulated alternator.
