They also failed to be rescued by their ditch bag or other equipment. There will always be summary catastrophes and it really isn't valid to draw conclusions from them.

The newest GPS satellites being launched are much more hardened against solar flares. I read an article where they stated they believed them to be pretty much immune to even large ones.

I think the focus on GPS in this thread is on the global providing (transmitting) system itself going down - not on individual receiver problems.

Having GPS backups to backups is a very good idea....

That is a function of the charts and not the chart plotter. If your plotter is using the same charts as you have on paper, then there will be no difference and you will sail right across land with...

Who has only one GPS on board? We have 10, and most of those snuck onboard hidden in other things. Our cameras have GPS's in them! Phones, tablets, HH, AIS, stand alone systems, a hockey puck, VHF...
