Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

Interesting coincidence: back in 1990 we were working our way across the South Pacific. We had a current Sat-nav on board, but it was having difficulties. We were on passage, intending to stop at...

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

Thanks for that, Evans. That chart, the i-pad version. is kinda incocmprehensible to me. Maybe due to lack of familiarity with the features of Navionics cartography, but seeing the reef markers...

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

If you will look back to the early part of the thread, the actual position of the wreck was shown on three different chart systems, including Navionics. ALL THREE showed the boat ON THE REEF, not on...

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

After "12,000 miles of experience", you would have thought they would have noted the colors used on the e-charts and committed them to memory.

And none of the "charts were stuffed" comments...

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

Dave, consider that there is an onshore wind, usually an onshore set, it is dark.... There are any number of reasons that you or your boat might suddenly be compromised in ability to maintain that...

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

At least two miles. Likely more... and that with the previous knowledge that the charts are in agreement with reality, either from observation or comparison with satellite imaging.

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

Gee, that sounds a lot like what some of us mere sailors have been saying. A surprising response, one that raises Navianic's status in my jaded eyes!

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

Well Noah, I have the time but am on a rather limited data budget. So, if you are really interested in helping them get funding, why don't you summarize their position for us?

Until convinced...

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

Guys, the Navionics chart wasn't wrong. It shows the reef in the correct position. It agrees well with the google earth photo.

Re Jeppson (and Naviaonics) Of course they use official data as...

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

But the Navionic chart seems very much like the official charts, and not inaccurate in this position.

What do you expect them to do?

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

So, looking at the satellite photos, it is clear that they hit the fringing reef, not some outlier. They reported that there were big seas running. When big seas encounter fringe reefs, they generate...

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

thanks for that. On our elderly CM93 charts, that is well up into the reef area, as shown on the chart. Don't have access to Navionics, but based on the CM93, I would have been at least a couple of...

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

The limiting thing is the speed of sound in water. The sonar emits a ping (carefully collimated into a beam and carefully aimed somewhere ahead of the boat). Then it waits patiently until the echo...

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

RE forward looking sonar: We've used and enjoyed ours for around 20 years now. In some situations, they are extremely useful, but as Paul L points out, not in this case. They were not slowly feeling...

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

I join all in expressing sympathy to the family for their misadventure and loss. However, until we know the exact coordinates of the stranding, and can check the relevant charts, I think blaming...
