Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

In company with 5 other boats, I sat in the lee of Elafonisis Island during 3 days of Bf 5-7.
With the exception if two multihulls all the anchored boats were yawing through 50 - 60 degrees.
The...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

If dropped from a stationary boat my Mantus appears to do the same, descending in a series of side-slips.
However it's seldom dropped from stationary.
I noted that one poster seemed to consider...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

I strongly suspect, though can't see in the photos, that the two flukes are not in the same plane.
Mine had the same problem after fouling the cable between St Agnes and Gugh. It worked OK again...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

The Delta is probably the most-used anchor in the world - it's cheap (that's why it's OE for most boatbuilders) it self-stows and self launches (making it preferable to the CQR) and usually sets...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

peen the end of the bolt over in a "belt and braces" approach. An alternative would be to add some Loctite as well, although this may effect how the nyloc part functions.

I can assure you that...

I guess you've just found another drowned city.
Two a penny in the Aegean.

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

One could, perhaps, be forgiven for thinking it's another variation on the Delta.
Its sizing is also similar to the Delta.
Perhaps someone could elaborate as to how it differs, mechanically, from...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

It's actually very easy, providing you don't go above 14mm 8-plait with 8mm chain, 12mm 8-plait with 7mm and 10mm with 6mm chain.
Detailed on Jimmy Green Marine website. Take 9 links length of...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

My experience, hardly infinite, is that anchors are far more likely to drag downhill than uphill.

Interesting that Noelex estimates that bad sets represent 80% of the failures - though "new-age"...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

I'd go far as to suggest avoiding anchoring downwind of any sailors - bad enough having my own drag with which to contend than with another's. I have to say that Noelex appears to hjave been unlucky...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

It cost $100 to ship my 25lb Mantus from Texas to Thessaloniki and took 8 days. (Direct because no stock of 25lbs in Netherlands).
Greg has used his own Mantus without a roll bar for a season with...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Looking at these pix, my guess is that you assembled the roll-bar when the anchor was in the roller.
Which is what I'll have to do, when mine arrives. We'll then see if I can climb over it when...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

I'd agree with Noelex that the shank is straight, but I suspect, when recovered one will find the shackle jammed down the shank, so that the pull is closer to the root and totally unbalancing the...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

It takes much longer to set, than modern anchors, about 4-5m and needs far more pulling in than most people give it and it really doesn't take well to short scopes - I find 5:1 about the minimum....

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Well I really look forward to having a "new-age" anchor, because apart from 2 resets, my CQR has dug in every time and held me in 48 anchorings this season. None, admittedly, in much above a frisky...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Many would opine that, as different bottoms suit different anchors, one's second bower should be a totally different design.
Don't give up hope - I've costed a 25lb Mantus to Greece and including...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

If in Turkey look @ the Ultra - Noelex has some shots and it's performance is creditable - above all it's pretty.

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

The Mantus on-line brochure definitely suggests you can dispense with the anti-roll bar. In fact I'd suggest it will lower the CofG and increase the likelihood of landing flukes down.

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Nah,

Just needs someone to go onto the sand and use their boot to pound the flukes in!

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

I'd second trying it without the roll bar. I'd guess the CoG is below the CoE so it should make no difference.
If so my dilemma (finding an anchor, as light as a 25lb CQR, which fits my boat) is...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Excellent fact-based stuff, which leads me, increasingly to the belief that the anchorer is the more important variable than the anchor.

Noelex, have you any photos yet of anchors set entirely...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

I'd tend to agree, certainly about the farther one which has a totally different shape plough to my current CQR. I too had a Sowester copy CQR and it was a truly dreadful anchor.
