Re: Solar Upgrade verse Running the Generator

The efficiency is there with ground source of course, more so because the water source is a constant temp, year round. South Ga it's 68 degrees F. When it gets cold, there isn't enough heat in the...

Solar Upgrade verse Running the Generator

That is only due to packaging constraints.
By that I mean of course by being water cooled you can have a small package and locate it pretty much anywhere in the boat and plumb water to it.
Air...

Solar Upgrade verse Running the Generator

Again, there is very little difference in efficiency between a thin walled evaporator and a cold plate, the efficiencies come from a properly sized condenser, and an expansion valve etc., but mostly...

Re: Solar Upgrade verse Running the Generator

Cool Blue is air cooled.
There is no real difference in efficiency between air cooled and water cooled. Water cooling is only required if the air cooling isn't done right.
Water cooling brings...

Solar Upgrade verse Running the Generator

Mine is also a BD80, but it's a 14 cu ft spillover and keeps the freezer at single digits and the fridge in the low 30's F of course.
I think mine runs at lower RPM at times, cause right now with...

Solar Upgrade verse Running the Generator

To pull 6 amps, you must have a LARGE compressor, my 6K BTU air conditioner with the raw water pump only pulls about that.
There may not be a DC compressor that large.

Re: Solar Upgrade verse Running the Generator

Not to bust too many manufacturers of "marine" fridge systems, but there is no boost in efficiency when you go from 120 V to 12 V. In fact the 12 VDC compressors are actually AC driven, the...

Re: Solar Upgrade verse Running the Generator

That is why you can get by with a few hundred watts of Solar, and why I need a Kilowatt. It's why when someone asks how much Solar do I need, the answer is, it depends.
My fridge alone uses more...

Solar Upgrade verse Running the Generator

Worst case number, with Satellite TV system on and TV on, with fridge compressor running, several lights, radio, autopilot, inverter etc.
Average consumption is around 10 amps I think. I do not yet...

Re: Solar Upgrade verse Running the Generator

Likely you will need quite a bit more than 300W, reason is you need 300W MORE than the house load. My typical daytime house load is about 15 amps, which I believe takes 200W to just break even, then...

Re: Solar Upgrade verse Running the Generator

If your curious, I have a Sterling pro charge ultra and can show it to you.
However what makes the most sense is to hit the batteries with as high a charge rate as is possible with the generator in...

Re: Solar Upgrade verse Running the Generator

There should be no start up load on a purely resistive load, it's not like there is a motor at zero RPM that has to spool up. It's like a big light bulb.
Many water heaters are 1500W, that is like...
