Re: Shortening Drive Shaft

Diving the boat to clean the prop, you rotate each blade and can feel any looseness or roughness in the bearings, there is no detectable play at all, must be some pre-load on the bearings, or...

Re: Shortening Drive Shaft

My God, can you imagine playing around a turning prop in the water?
Gives me the willies even thinking about it, about like trying to sharpen the blade on a running lawnmower :danger:

Talk about...

Re: Shortening Drive Shaft

I can't find it right now, but Fsstbttms gave me a link to islers diving, they make a bronze adapter that fits a standard "B" prop zinc to an autoprop, much cheaper, more effective and more widely...

Re: Shortening Drive Shaft

Frankly,
You have an Autoprop? Why a shaft zinc?
What are you putting on your prop anti foul wise? Mine is bare and I'm getting tired of scraping the thing, although it does come clean...

Re: Shortening Drive Shaft

There are two and three blade Autoprops, mine is a three blade.
They can be balanced, but this is a harmonic vibration, meaning that all is fine, then quite rapidly if I get much over 2,000 RPM...

Re: Shortening Drive Shaft

Prop is balanced, it was new. If you have seen an Autoprop, not sure how you could check blade tracking as the things will spin in circles. It's sort of intriguing that the thing even works.
I have...

Re: Shortening Drive Shaft

Well, I paid for the shaft to be removed and run out checked, I do not believe it was done though, I know the alignment that I paid for was not. So if I go the pay someone to do it route, I want to...

Re: Shortening Drive Shaft

No telling, maybe shaft has been replaced? It only sticks out 2.5" so maybe a little over an inch too long, I would have thought that 2.5" would have been OK, but it's the only thing left that can be...

Re: Shortening Drive Shaft

Frankly, I just replaced all four trying to tame this vibe, and aligned as close as I can get, which is awfully close.

What do you think of the yard in Lynhaven? Miller Marine I think its called....

Shortening Drive Shaft

An issue with taking it in is the $350 or so to pull the boat, then I have to pull the shaft log or the rudder. Quickly turns into at least a $500 bill before any work is done on the shaft, and if...

Re: Shortening Drive Shaft

I've not taken it apart yet, bits I have are cobalt 135 degree.
I am surprised at no key myself, although a key ought not be relied on to absorb torque. I may find a key, if I do then it just...

Re: Shortening Drive Shaft

That is an option, have to remove the shaft log or the rudder though to pull the shaft, but then you get to inspect it for pitting and straightness, although I paid somone to do that just shy of two...

Re: Shortening Drive Shaft

I figured on an aluminum turkey basting pan to catch oil and filings etc.
I won't rig a pump but it would be nice, I'll likely use an oil can filled with tap magic cutting fluid.

Re: Shortening Drive Shaft

I'll leave the shaft connected to the transmission to drill, that will hold it. I intend to drill before cutting.
Yes I will use 1/8" Cobalt for the pilot hole, I figure have four with me.
I'll...

Re: Shortening Drive Shaft

I've not machined stainless, I'm just an old oilfield welder and hack mechanic, but I have drilled a many a hole, and work hardening is exactly what worries me, I know drill slow, with a lot of...

Re: Shortening Drive Shaft

I was thinking with it slowly spinning that I could get a perfect straight cut, sort of like it was chucked in a Lathe, just cut the majority of it that way though, finish by hand.
Drilling the...

Shortening Drive Shaft

I need to shorten mine by about three inches, there is too much shaft sticking out behind my Cutlass and this may be contributing to a drive train vibration problem that I have had since I bought the...
