Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

Is it possible that Dick Cheney has a place there and that is why the image is obscured on GE?

Hm, last time I checked GE had good images of North Minerva, but not South.

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

This is not an island, it is a remote reef/atoll. Going in at night for the first time would be suicidal with my navigation skills. The pictures in the article look like file photos of Niue, which is...

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

I'm pretty sure the Leopard's skipper has excellent spatial orientation skills, as he is/was a commercial pilot.

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

It is the chart that was being doubted here. There really are places where chart elements are correct except their positions are shifted significant distances - lime in miles. Staying in deep water...

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

How would you navigate to stay in the 2000m waters? I don't have anything onboard that reliably will measure 200m depths, and that's with two depth sounders.

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

1/4 from where? It kind of begs the question since you are measuring from the charts position, which is exactly what you don't trust.
A Kiwi boat was lost a few months ago on passage from NZ to...

Picked this up on the Yahoo Cruisers Network email list. Great response from Navionics:

[QUOTE]. It was a strange sail from Mo’orea to Huahine because the ocean seemed annoyed and stormy. /QUOTE]

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

The Navionics display seems pretty poor, even though the underlying data appears correct. Since these are vector charts how they display is up to the chart plotter software. Using blue as drying...

Ann
In addition there really wasn't a need to be there as night was falling. It would have been better, albeit in hindsight, to do the 80 mile run leaving in late day and arriving in daylight after...

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

I don't have enough bandwidth to watch videos. I have an Echopilot FLS. They claim upto 200m forward of the boat. That's optimistic. In practice you get good info at 3kts. The distance you see ahead...

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

How will you be cross referencing with paper and pencil? Using even older paper charts than the electronic ones, often on a completely different datum, isn't going to help a lot.

Understanding...

But by the grace of God go I.
It can happen to anyone. It is still useful to understand what happened, learn from it and be better prepared. That is one of the advantages of forums like CF.

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

It's not really the scan speed that is the issue, it is the distance in front of the vessel that they can see. If you can only see 100-150 feet ahead then when you calculate the reaction time you'd...

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

Forward Looking Sonar is of little or no use in the this case. The reefs come out of extremely deep water very quickly in the South Pacific. We use our FLS all the time in close in anchoring...

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

The quality of the chart in use in this case seems to only have been a possibly small contribution to the accident. Trip planning (day trip instead of overnight), evening arrival in reef surrounded...

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

In many parts of the world you have two choices with charts: use the charts available or don't. In the Pacific there are thousands of reefs that are either not on a chart or are misplaced. As a...
