Re: Cruising boat for a 62 and 63 year old?.

If your definition of "livability" consists primarily of square footage and optimizing it for the 95% of the time you plan to be at anchor, then I guess a houseboat is the ultimate cruising yacht? To...

Re: Cruising boat for a 62 and 63 year old?.

This discussion hasn't really been about 60' motorboats like yours. You may have found an exception to the rule by somehow purchasing a nice 60' motorboat for very little money, but looking on...

Re: Cruising boat for a 62 and 63 year old?.

Simi, I think I’ve been pretty clear about many other issues besides big windows, such as ultimate stability, more comfortable motion at sea, fuel economy, and longer range as reasons why I feel that...

Re: Cruising boat for a 62 and 63 year old?.

Simi, your boat looks beautiful in the pictures but your boat is also significantly larger than the motorboats I mentioned, like 50% longer which amounts to 2 or 3 times the displacement with...

Re: Cruising boat for a 62 and 63 year old?.

I really don't get these references to "cave dwelling" as a derisive term when referring to sailboats. Almost all boats, motor or sail, have most of their accommodations within the hull (cave) rather...

Re: Cruising boat for a 62 and 63 year old?.

Great post, I agree 100%! Unless there’s an actual physical issue that prevents it, spending time at sea on a sailboat is probably the best thing for us!

Re: Cruising boat for a 62 and 63 year old?.

I’d agree that for anyone who feels they may not be physically up to a sailboat that a motorboat is a great option. But no physical impairment was mentioned in the OP. I’m about the same age (61)...

Re: Cruising boat for a 62 and 63 year old?.

If it’s a motorboat puttering along very slowly and very efficiently then it’s probably a much bigger engine turning much more slowly than most sailboats would have. That’s not a good way to treat an...

Re: Cruising boat for a 62 and 63 year old?.

You seem to not understand that, just as the name suggests, this forum is for and about cruisers, and cruisers do cross oceans or travel long distances on the ocean and that can be done more...

Re: Cruising boat for a 62 and 63 year old?.

To get that 95% number you must have included lakes in Oklahoma but most readers of this forum are interested in cruising on the ocean so those numbers aren’t very applicable. I won’t quibble about...

Re: Cruising boat for a 62 and 63 year old?.

Actually, though I’d obviously prefer my motor to be working, if I needed to go somewhere without it, I wouldn’t have a problem with choosing to go without the motor so I had to rely on my sails. The...

Re: Cruising boat for a 62 and 63 year old?.

I'm not sure what you think is "unfair" about the comparison I made between the efficiency of my friends boat vs mine. It is what it is and his boat is a fairly typical type that many boaters in my...

Re: Cruising boat for a 62 and 63 year old?.

Of course I realize that there are many differences between a displacement sailboat and a semi displacement motorboat. But the comparison I am trying to make is that to get about the same amount of...

Re: Cruising boat for a 62 and 63 year old?.

It's sort of tough to call your 60' motoryacht a "fair comparison" with a typical 40 something foot cruising sailboat. I don't doubt that your boat, with its 50 something foot waterline is very...

Re: Cruising boat for a 62 and 63 year old?.

I suppose that an argument can be made for trawlers but I understand why many people seem to prefer a sailboat even if they motor a lot.

For example, my best friend has a 38' lobster yacht that...
