Hmmm, my EPIRBs are 'programmed' with my MMSI....

You might be right in that, although I was under the impression that it was mandatory with the 406 beacons.

IslandHopper and Auspiscious already partly answered your question. The first 3 digits show the country code (see also post #13 in this thread). When in Oz, you may be able to get away not to change...

I have only experience with Icom. When I purchased a new Icom VHF it was easy to program. I programmed that way 4 or 5 VHF and HF radios of others.
