Re: Feature Requests

Just to second that (although the topic may be dropped now). It's been a while since I contributed any code (sorry) and latest WX may have changed but I found the networking classes rather limited...

Re: Feature Requests

This has changed since I last looked: Early last year I was testing android GPS apps and found the same inconsistencies that Hillian Fellers is noting. At that time though OpenCPN would accept the...

Re: Feature Requests

+1.

I personally have reservations about SignalK as an "NMEA-replacement" communications protocol (YMMV), but it's great as a model for sharing information at a high level, and inter-boat...

Re: Linux Ubuntu installation script

Although I understand the (very reasonable) reason for this, my vote would be against. Although this is fine for a single user system (the common case for OpenCPN installs), on a multi-user system...

Re: Feature Requests

I'm guessing the NMEA might counter that ocpn's fault (and my own code makes the same mistake) is in treating <CR><LF> as a delimiter rather than a terminator. Treat "!"/"$" as the start of a...

Re: Feature Requests

Thanks Dave:

FS#1063 with patch which compiles on linux to show the general idea for basic multicast support but needs brushing up for windows portability by someone who actually knows what...

Re: Feature Requests

You don't need it: I think I stressed that. In fact if any OCPN mac or linux users really want to use multicast (over IPv4 or IPv6) they could just use kplex ...

Re: Feature Requests

Just to be clear, I wasn't at all suggesting replacing broadcast, just adding multicast as another option. Fact is that other things which OpenCPN needs to talk to often support it, but almost...

Re: Feature Requests

Much as I hate to disagree in a public forum...I think you may have got the wrong end of the stick with this. Unless you are running some perverse OS which keeps its network cards in promiscuous...

Re: Feature Requests

Broadcast causes every node on the subnet to interrupt its cpu to process a packet it possibly isn't interested in (the OS will then discard it if nothing is listening for it). Admittedly not really...

Multicast data connections

All sensible folk know that broadcast is evil and sooo 20th century, yet lots of "NMEA over IP" software implemented it for data receipt and distribution just because others did and no-one was doing...
