Actually this raises a very interesting point; why isn't this medium called "ferro concrete"?

Isn't cement just the powder component of the 'mud'?

Not sure what your point is but if you are saying that any used boat regardless of hull material is a big unknown then I have to disagree.

Most hull materials are reasonably easy to check for...

I have always understood that having sections of the hull x-rayed gave a good indication of the amount of steel remaining remaining in the armature - but perhaps I am misinformed :(.
