Re: What is your Favorite Boat?

I recommend the graduated-length method. Get a Catalina 22(2-3 grand) and go sailing. They are not the fastest or the best, but they give you that wonderful seat-of-the-pants kick that makes a day...

Re: Cheap Wind Generator - Anybody Tried One ?

Chapati is Indian flatbread. Maybe you call it nan? I thought maybe it was more familiar than tacos in Oz.
O.T. We have fond memories of an indian restaurant over by the botanical gardens in Sydney....

Re: Cheap Wind Generator - Anybody Tried One ?

Erika, I'm Russ, he's not Russ:D
Anyway Hoohaa,
UHMWPE is ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethelene.
It's a very fancy grade of polyethelene plastic. Kinda like the food containers, but much higher...

Re: Cheap Wind Generator - Anybody Tried One ?

It looks like you mean to cut a slot in the end of the SS tube. I would make it a bit oversize and then fold a pice of thin UHMWPE in there to both insulate and reduce chafe. If it gets built as...

Re: Height of Atomic 4 replacement

If the Atomic-4 is not your cup of tea, then perhaps Beta Marine ?

If you don't have a boat yet, just find one that will fit the diesel. My old...

Re: New Sailor Saying HELLO !!!

I rebuilt my Atomic-4. It's not a deal breaker. I don't do the "diesels are better" argument, I just dance with the one that brung me. Due prudence with fire safety and keeping water out of the fuel...

Re: Diesel Runaway or Overspeeding

Older mercedes diesels(four stroke) had vacuum governors. I think I remmeber a big leak in the plastic vacuum line would make them race. Duct tape can fix it for a few years.

I made mine run...

Re: Name Change - Folklore and Superstition

You're right, homage and tradition are good things. I don't want to be a stick-in-the-mud, so let's toast the powers that be.

Re: Name Change - Folklore and Superstition

The world runs on entropy, and it naturally wants to mess with you. Luck is another name for the future. You have a good future or a bad future, you just can't predict it. Good "luck" comes from...

Re: Who Still Practices Celestial Navigation ?

Yep,
I have the "mark 15" plastic one, it's fine. I also have to give a strong recommendation to this book; Illustrated Navigation by Ivar Dedekam, Dedekam Design - Illustrated Sail & Rig Tuning -...

Re: Who Still Practices Celestial Navigation ?

I voted #2
Four years ago I took a community college class in celestial Nav. I got a "c", and I worked for it.
I was rather bad at it, but I feel that I could get in practice. That seems to be the...

Re: Lurking from Alaska

I do get to that side when My Brother is in town. He has Steered the Waters a few times or crewed on the Kittiwake.
I've heard loud rock-n-roll from that big black crabber—you must need ear plugs to...

Re: Lurking from Alaska

I do plan to come down in March. I'll be doing much the same things as you over on P-14. FYI, Happy hour is when the sun finally fills the cockpit when I park the boat pointed north-ish.

Re: Lurking from Alaska

Hi Mike,
I would surely love to do the ICW some day.
Capt. 58, I remember the Inua. Didn't realize it was a Skookum hull. I'll go look at her closer next time I get down.
The Dutch Baby was always...

Thanks for the welcome.
Capt. 58, I don't now your boat, but I have been on Dutch Baby another Skookum that is out of Homer. I think it's over in Cordova right now. The owners also have the Predator...

Lurking from Alaska

Hello,
I am just up and on the forum for real now after using it for a few years for research and ideas to fix things on my boat, a tired Columbia that someone else sailed up from Seattle.
I live...
